Mental Health America of Fredericksburg

Mental Health America of Fredericksburg is a private, nonprofit, United Way agency dedicated to the goals of improving attitudes regarding mental illness, improving services for the mentally ill, and working for the prevention of mental illness and the promotion of mental health.


Depending on student preparation and interest and the needs of the agency, the student’s duties may include:

  • Developing and/or implementing community education projects
  • Acting as a liaison with other community agencies
  • Participating in legislative advocacy work, including contact with area and state legislators
  • Assisting with creating and editing the agency’s bimonthly newsletter
  • Developing and implementing fund-raising activities
  • Assisting with office administrative tasks using computers


  1. Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
  2. Required courses:
    • PSYC 211 – Abnormal Psychology
    • PSYC 315 – Foundations of Clinical Psychology
  3. Recommended courses:
    • PSYC 232 – Developmental Psychology: The Adolescent and Adult
    • PSYC 394 – Psychopharmacology
    • SOCG 155 – Social Issues


  • 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)  
  • Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
