Kenmore Club

Kenmore Club is a psychosocial rehabilitation program that supports adults with severe mental illness.  The program is open Monday through Friday from 8-4:30 with occasional weekend hours.  Activities at the clubhouse support individual recovery and promote community living by teaching coping, daily living, and social skills.  There are a wide variety of skill building groups including groups to enhance social skills, enhance workplace skills, and increase emotion management. The program provides access to the community through a variety including hosting presentations by partner agencies, participating in local and state events, and training on the use of public and Medicaid transportation.  Staff come from a variety of professional and personal backgrounds and students can gain experience working with a variety of different specialists such including social workers and occupational rehabilitation counselors.  As a result, of staff diversity and programmatic structure, Kenmore Club can offer a variety of supports and services to promote recovery. Students who intern at Kenmore club will learn about the symptoms and impacts of severe mental illness, learn about community resources and the welfare system, gain in communication skills, and enhance professional skills including appropriate documentation and communication skills. It is expected that students will defer to staff for questions of medical needs, emergencies, program regulations, mental health services, etc.

Duties

  • Assist with group preparation
  • Observe and participate in group activities
  • Build clinical communication skills by interacting with members and staff
  • Participate in staff meetings
  • Complete prearranged assignments in conjunction with school program, i.e. reports, journal entries, assessment/evaluations
  • Research for groups/interventions/diagnoses
  • Participate in trainings as required
  • Meet with supervising staff to evaluate progress and learning
  • Utilize building and resources appropriately
  • Other duties as assigned based on interest of the intern. Such duties will not be beyond student skill and internship expectations

Pre-Requisites

  1. 12 hours of Psychology beyond PSYC 100 – General Psychology
  2. Required courses:
    • PSYC 315 – Foundations of Clinical Psychology (note, PSYC 211 – Psychopathology is a pre-requisite for this course).
  3. Recommended courses:
    • PSYC 394 – Psychopharmacology

Additional Requirements

  • Students must submit an employment application to RACSB. They can pick up this application at RACSB in order to complete it. Part of the application process involves background checks.
  • Students must attend a 4 day training session prior to beginning the internship. These training sessions run every two weeks and must be completed before the start of the semester. TB testing is part of the training. Interns are expected to plan ahead – it is advisable to reach out to Kenmore club no later than advising week the semester before you plan to do the internship.

Assessment

  • 3 credit interns only – 126 hours of work.
  • Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
