Fox Therapy Center specializes in offering speech pathology and occupational therapy services to children aged 1 to 18 years. It is also a Certified Autistic Center that specializes in working with children with autism. Their mission is to help these clients reach their full potential at an appropriate pace by providing a comfortable, secure, and fun environment in a private, outpatient clinical setting.

Interns will become familiarized with various treatments and techniques that both speech pathologists and occupational therapists implement each day. Interns will work under the direct supervision of the general manager, a licensed clinical speech pathologist.

Duties

  • Completing online training* about working with children with autism
  • Completing online training* about HIPAA** and becoming HIPAA certified
  • Observing both speech and occupational therapy sessions in individual settings
  • Helping the therapists prepare for and organize treatment sessions
  • Assisting therapists with material-making
  • Assisting with special projects (e.g. sensory groups, social skills groups)
  • Completing various office tasks (e.g. answering phones, filing)
  • Reading and studying written reports to learn more about occupational therapy

* As per Department of Psychological Science policy, training hours can only account for up to 20% of internship hours

** HIPAA is a law established in 1996 that’s intended to protect the privacy and confidentiality of an individual’s personal medical records and health information

Pre-Requisites

  1. Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
  2. Required courses:
    • PSYC 231 – Developmental Psychology: The Infant and Child or PSYC 232 – Developmental Psychology: The Adolescent and Adult
    • PSYC 253 – Fundamentals of Learning and Motivation
  3. Recommended courses:
    • PSYC 211 – Abnormal Psychology
    • PSYC 315- Foundations of Clinical Psychology
    • PSYC 320 – Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth
    • PSYC 339 – Health Psychology
    • PSYC 372 – Sensation and Perception
    • PSYC 273 – Cognitive Psychology

Assessment

  • 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)  
  • Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
