Empowerhouse

UMW’s Department of Psychological Science currently supports a placement with Empowerhouse, an agency that addresses the needs of victims of domestic violence, their dependent children, and their abusers. Services include advocacy and follow-up programs in addition to a safe house.

Duties:

  • 24-hour hotline-crisis intervention, safety planning, information, and referral
  • Individual advocacy
  • Reports
  • Record-keeping
  • Support groups for survivors and children of survivors
  • Educational groups for men and women charged with assault on their partners
  • Weekly contact with campus supervisor

Assessment:

  • 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)  
  • Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper

Pre-Requisites:

  1. Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
  2. Required courses:
    • PSYC 315 – Foundations of Clinical Psychology
    • PSYC 201 – Social Psychology
  3. Recommended course:
    • PSYC 350 – Psychology of Women
    • SOCG 332 – Introduction to Social Welfare
