disAbility Resource Center – Youth Group Team

The disAbility Resource Center assists people with disabilities to live as independently as possible by providing them, those who support them, and the community with information, education, and resources. The dRC Youth Services Transition Specialist works with youth and young adults with disabilities ages 17 to 22 in an interactive setting, providing them with information about independent living skills, employment, housing, transportation, social skills, and more. Youth also learn about local, state, and federal legislative advocacy in addition to the connection between personal issues, community concerns, and social forces.

Duties

  • Working with the Youth Services Transition Specialist to develop and prepare material for the Youth Leadership Team
  • Working one-on-one with youth with disabilities at Youth Leadership meetings
  • Co-facilitating Youth Leadership meetings
  • Coordinating with local high schools to aid in creating school-based Youth Leadership Teams
  • Helping to arrange transportation for students to get to and from meetings
  • Helping Youth Services staff to develop and organize training materials
  • Increasing knowledge of person-centered planning and independent living

Pre-Requisites

  1. Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
  2. Required courses:
    • PSYC 211 – Abnormal Psychology
    • PSYC 232 – Developmental Psychology: The Adolescent and Adult
  3. Recommended course:
    • PSYC 320 – Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth
    • PSYC 315 – Foundations of Clinical Psychology
    • PSYC 201 – Social Psychology

Assessment

  • 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)  
  • Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
