disAbility Resource Center – SOLE Group

The disAbility Resource Center assists people with disabilities to live as independently as possible by providing them, those who support them, and the community with information, education, and resources.  The SOLE group works with young adults, approximately 20-30 years old, in an interactive setting, providing them with information about independent living skills, budgeting, employment, and advocacy.  This group also discusses current events, self-esteem and how that pertains to everyday living at home and at the workplace.

Duties:

  •  Working with staff to recruit, coordinate and lead a Young Adult Independent Living group consisting of young adults with disabilities ages 20 to 30
  •  Working with staff to  research, review, and prepare new materials for use in the group
  •   Working one-on-one with team members to develop independent living skills curriculum including social, health, financial, household maintenance, and self-advocacy skills
  •   Assisting in organizing hard and electronic resources
  •   Co-facilitate bi-weekly group meetings
  •   Working with staff on other non-profit tasks approximately 5 hours a week to include dRC awareness activities (organizing materials, making phone calls, electronic organization of material, etc.)

Pre-Requisites:

  1. Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
  2. Required courses:
    • PSYC 211 – Psychopathology
    • PSYC 232 – Adolescent and Emerging Adult Development
  3. Recommended course:
    • PSYC 320 – Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth
    • PSYC 315 – Foundations of Clinical Psychology
    • PSYC 201 – Social Psychology

Assessment:

  • 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)
  • Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
