Capital Caring: Family and Community Care Intern

Capital Caring is a hospice and palliative care organization that also provides bereavement counseling services to its clients’ families and to the broader community. Our mission is to improve care for those facing life-limiting illness through direct support of patients and their families, public education, and public advocacy.

Duties:

  1. Coordinating “Caring Crew” program which consists of leading youth and adult volunteers in outreach experiences in local assisted living facilities and memory care communities
  2. Serving as leader to volunteers visiting, facilitating crafts and games, and delivering flowers, etc. to senior residents and patients in local communities
  3. Assisting the Community Outreach Coordinator with outreach efforts to include expos, career fairs, church festivals, and other community events
  4. Assisting with public relations regarding Point of Hope camps and special events
  5. Conducting research related to local senior care communities, faith communities, and civic organizations
  6. Providing general community outreach and volunteer coordination support in the office

All potential interns must complete a background check prior to being accepted into a position.  Interns also have to do 6 hours of hospice training and 2 hours of working with patients with dementia training.  Additional trainings may also be needed depending in the projects bring undertaken.

Prerequisites:

  1. Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
  2. Required courses:
    • PSYC 233 – Adult Development
    • PSYC 211 – Psychopathology or PSYC 201 – Social Psychology

Assessment

  • 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)
  • Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
