Here is information from the Faculty Handbook regarding the committee’s organization and duties:<\/h3>\n

F.6.2 CAS Promotion and Tenure Committee\u00a0<\/strong> The committee consists of nine elected faculty members, eight from the College of Arts and Sciences and one faculty member external to CAS, all to be elected by the CAS faculty. All members must have attained the rank of associate professor or above with tenure, and at least four members shall have attained the rank of full professor, by the date of election. Members serve staggered three-year terms, with three persons elected each year. The committee elects a chair from its membership. Members are nominated and elected according to the rules spelled out in \u00a7F.5.3.5 of this Handbook. The committee\u2019s duties are to:<\/p>\n

.1 Make recommendations in the matters of promotion according to College faculty promotion policy and procedures (Appendix I, \u00a7\u00a7 I.1-2 of this Handbook). In making its recommendations, the primary responsibility of the committee is to evaluate all candidates\u2019 applications according to the criteria stated in the Faculty Handbook.<\/p>\n

.2 Make recommendations to the Dean in matters of tenure according to College faculty tenure policy and procedures (Appendix I, \u00a7\u00a7I.3-4 of this Handbook). Each canvas course template will have labeled sections to direct the candidate in the upload of the file contents. Please direct any questions to the Chair of the Promotion and Tenure committee, Andrew Dolby.<\/p>\n<p>On August 30, the Department Chairs will access the Canvas course and upload all letters of recommendation for the candidates.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p><strong>Options for Preparing Appendices (sections 6-8 in the Canvas template)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I. Assemble the file yourself<\/strong><br \/>\nSome of the information you gather will come to you as a PDF, such as student evaluations or the title page of an article manuscript. Others may need conversion, such as pictures, symposium covers, , etc. You can control only part of how you get the information and may be faced with multiple PDF files. If you are starting with multiple PDFs, Adobe Pro will easily allow you to merge multiple files into one master file and also allow for the creation of tabs, which makes it easier for you and members of the Committee to navigate your file. Mac users will also find that Preview is a helpful PDF editor.<br \/>\nIf the information is not already in PDF format, open the document and save to PDF, or use the departmental copier to scan it and\/or other items as a PDF.<br \/>\n\u2022 Scan 50-70 pages at a time if PDF black & white (this is important only if you are emailing file to self)<br \/>\n\u2022 Scan 25 pages at a time if PDF color (this is important only if you are emailing file to self)<br \/>\n\u2022 Pages that are not 8 \u00bd x 11 must be scanned as single page files<br \/>\n\u2022 Some copiers have a Job Build function that will assemble the various scans into one document (for a flash drive). Be sure you scan the documents in the proper order using this function.<br \/>\nThere are computers with Adobe Pro installed in the Convergence Center (ground floor) that are accessible to faculty 24\/7 with your EagleOne card.<br \/>\nRecall that Adobe Pro will allow you to merge all separate file parts into one file. Be certain that the various components you have assembled are in the correct order as you merge them into the final file. Further instruction on how to use Adobe Pro is included below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>II. Have the UMW Copy Center assemble your file<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Copy Center will scan all documents and put them on a flash drive (which you provide). Planning ahead is essential. The Copy Center must receive any and all documents from you by Friday, August 16, 2024. Depending on the Center\u2019s workload getting ready for the start of the semester, this process may take up to one week to complete. It should NOT be misconstrued as a new list of requirements for promotion and tenure, nor as a substitute for the stated requirements in the Faculty handbook, but, rather, should serve as guidance to those striving to put together a successful file.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning with the 2024 applications, the documentation will be submitted in the form of a Candidate LMS Course. Candidates should contact the Promotion and Tenure Committee Chair for instructions on how to create their LMW course and to obtain a copy of the LMS file upload template.<\/p>\n<p>It is the candidate\u2019s responsibility to certify the accuracy and completeness of the files uploaded to their LMW course. There must be\u00a0<strong><u>no hyperlinks\u00a0<\/u><\/strong>embedded in this document. Appendices containing supporting evidence are limited to 100 pages each. The page limit for the appendix containing evidence of teaching effectiveness does not include syllabi or student course evaluations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>I.\u00a0 General<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Support assertions with evidence and documentation, (e.g., an email or letter supporting the claim that an article has been accepted for publication, the first page of a publication, the page in a conference\u2019s program where the candidate\u2019s presentation is listed, thank you note from a journal editor acknowledging a peer review).<\/li>\n<li>Take care to properly and consistently categorize activity as described in the Faculty Handbook. For example, participation in teaching workshops on campus belongs under teaching, not professional activity. Service to a professional organization, such as serving as an officer, board member, journal editor, or symposium organizer belongs under professional activity, not service.<\/li>\n<li>Candidates are responsible for making sure all required documents are in the file. If an APR is missing, the candidate should request a letter explaining its absence from the Chair or Dean.<\/li>\n<li>The committee reminds candidates that their creative, professional, and scholarly activity should be directed toward professional peers beyond their department and discipline. Do not include student-led presentations at UMW events such as Research and Creativity Day under professional activity. Be explicit in identifying why a given activity has significant value \u2013 do not assume that committee knows your discipline\u2019s professional norms.<\/li>\n<li>The committee reminds candidates that they must meet the criteria for tenure and\/or promotion in all three categories. A particularly strong performance in any one category does not absolve the candidate of the need to meet the criteria in the other two areas.<\/li>\n<li>The committee cannot consider materials not included in the file itself. This prohibition applies even to material to which the candidate\u2019s file refers (e.g., an online portfolio or a book or article manuscript). If a candidate wants the committee to consider something, make sure it is included in the file.<\/li>\n<li>The committee values student-faculty research collaboration. As with any collaborative effort, however, candidates should clearly specify their own scholarly contribution to the project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>II.\u00a0 Promotion to Senior Lecturer<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Candidates should provide specific examples of teaching effectiveness.<\/li>\n<li>Candidates with unusual teaching loads and\/or service responsibilities should document and explain them.<\/li>\n<li>Candidates should document substantive professional, scholarly, or creative activities. Mere attendance at professional conferences is not sufficient to meet the criteria for Senior Lecturer.<\/li>\n<li>Candidates should provide documentation of their engagement in service to their department, college, and the University. Such documentation can include testimonials from University colleagues, flyers and schedules for programs to which the candidate contributed, committee meeting minutes, or committee appointment letters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>III. Tenure and Promotion to Associate Professor<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Candidates with unusual teaching loads and\/or service responsibilities should document and explain them.<\/li>\n<li>Successful candidates provide multiple sources of evidence of effective teaching.<\/li>\n<li>Successful candidates generally document at least one creative, scholarly, or professional activity per year.<\/li>\n<li>The candidate should help the committee understand discipline norms.<\/li>\n<li>Successful candidates engaging in a major multi-year project (e.g., a book) during the probationary period should have a consistent record of documented professional activity\u2013either external documentation of progress on the major project (e.g., a book contract) or smaller, perhaps related activities such as conference presentations or book reviews.<\/li>\n<li>Successful candidates with a reduced probationary period are consistently active in all three areas from the moment their probationary period began (with the exception, of course, of the category of service in their first year) through the moment they submitted their credentials files.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>IV.\u00a0 Promotion to Professor<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In assessing the candidate\u2019s recognition in the discipline, the committee looks carefully at external letters. Successful candidate\u2019s external letters explicitly reference the candidate\u2019s recognition in the discipline, are written by those with the expertise to make such a judgment, and are ideally written by those with minimal personal ties to the candidate.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0The candidate should help the committee understand discipline norms.<\/li>\n<li>While three or more external letters are required (see I.1.3.3), successful candidates provide in their credentials file as much evidence as possible of recognition in the discipline to support external letters. A non-exhaustive list of relevant evidence includes: juried art shows, citations of the candidate\u2019s work, invitations to lecture, attend and\/or publish work in select venues, and reviews of the candidate\u2019s scholarly or creative work.
