He teaches courses related to American government, political behavior, public policy, and research methodology. He earned his Ph.D. in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland, College Park. Professor McDonald\u2019s research asks how American voters evaluate politicians and hold them accountable in an environment increasingly characterized by high levels of polarization and strong partisan identities. His most recent book, <a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/feeling-their-pain-9780197696903?cc=us&amp;lang=en&amp;\"><em>Feeling their Pain: Why Voters Want Leaders Who Care<\/em><\/a> (Oxford University Press, 2024), examines the factors that lead American voters to view political leaders as compassionate. He also co-authored <a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/citizens-of-the-world-9780197599389?cc=us&amp;lang=en&amp;\"><em>Citizens of the World: Political Engagement and Policy Attitudes of Millennials across the Globe<\/em><\/a> (Oxford University Press, 2022) which explores the generational divide in public opinion from a comparative perspective. His work has appeared in <em>The Journal of Politics<\/em>, <em>Public Administration Review<\/em>, <em>Political Behavior<\/em>, <em>American Politics Research<\/em>, <em>Electoral Studies<\/em>, <em>The International Journal of Public Opinion Research<\/em>, <em>Gender &amp; Politics<\/em>, <em>Politics, Groups, &amp; Identities<\/em>, and <em>The Journal of Experimental Political Science<\/em>.
