Piano Proficiency Exam (Updated March &#8217;26)"},"content":{"rendered":"<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><h1 id=\"h-guidelines-piano-proficiency-exam-updated-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Guidelines: Piano Proficiency Exam (Updated 2026)<\/h1><h2 id=\"h-introduction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UMW Piano Proficiency Exam allows students to demonstrate mastery of practical keyboard musicianship, ranging from solo performance to applied skills like score reading and improvisation.&nbsp; This exam <strong>supersedes the pre-2020 keyboard requirement<\/strong> for the Music Major (two credits of Class\/Applied Piano study).&nbsp; However, students are encouraged to enroll in Class\/Applied Piano to help prepare them for the exam, as needed.&nbsp; Ultimately, the goal of the exam is to encourage students to develop practical keyboard skills that they can apply <strong>beyond UMW<\/strong> to teaching, performance, composition, etc.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students may sign up for the Piano Proficiency Exam in one of two ways:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They may sign up during <strong>exam week<\/strong> at the end of the fall and spring semesters by signing up for <strong>two consecutive slots <\/strong>on the standard jury sign-up form, which is available outside Pollard 110 during the last week of classes.&nbsp; Students should write &ldquo;PPE&rdquo; beside their name to indicate their exam intentions.&nbsp; If a student is completing a piano jury, they may sign up for their <strong>piano jury slot, plus <em>one<\/em> additional consecutive slot <\/strong>for the Piano Proficiency Exam.&nbsp; In this case, the student may use one of their jury pieces as Part 1 of the exam (see below), as long as the piece has been preapproved.&nbsp; The student will also need to satisfy the Part 2 requirements (see below).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To take the exam at any other time throughout the year, students may <strong>e-mail the Director of Keyboard Studies (Dr. Wells)<\/strong> to schedule an examination in coordination with the other full-time music faculty.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We encourage all students with concerns about the exam format due to a documented disability to contact the Director of Keyboard Studies or Music Department Chair, as well as the Office of Disability Resources, so that we can provide accommodations as needed.&nbsp; For semesters in which UMW is partly\/fully online (due to COVID-19, natural disasters, etc.), students may perform the exam via Zoom or a similar video conferencing platform.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-exam-contents\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exam Contents<\/h2><h3 id=\"h-part-1\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 1<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Play <strong>one piano piece<\/strong> that has been <strong>approved <\/strong>by the Director of Keyboard Studies (Dr. Wells).&nbsp; Please e-mail or make an appointment with Dr. Wells (<a href=\"mailto:rwells@umw.edu\">rwells@umw.edu<\/a>) at least <strong>one week<\/strong> before you attempt the exam to check in about potential repertoire.&nbsp; Any of the following types of piece can count for Part 1 of the exam:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A fully-notated <strong>solo piano piece.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>piano accompaniment<\/strong> to an instrumental, vocal, or choral piece.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A prepared performance based on a<strong> lead sheet<\/strong> (melody + chords).<\/li>\n<\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For vocal accompaniments, you may sing while playing if you wish (although this is not required).<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The selected piece should satisfy the following requirements:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Both hands<\/strong> should be playing for the majority of the piece.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The material in the two hands should be <strong>mostly independent <\/strong>(e.g., the piece should not simply be a unison melody between the two hands).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The piece should demonstrate <strong>moderate rhythmic complexity.<\/strong><ul><li>What qualifies as &ldquo;moderate rhythmic complexity&rdquo; might vary depending on the time signature, tempo, etc.&nbsp; For instance, in 4\/4, there should be some rhythms faster than a quarter note, while in cut time, there should be rhythms faster than a half note.&nbsp; Dotted rhythms, ties, and tuplets can also boost the rhythmic complexity factor.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When you meet with Dr. Wells, he can let you know if your piece satisfies this requirement and give you some guidance otherwise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>copy of the score <\/strong>for your piece (paper or digital&mdash;if digital, please e-mail to Dr. Wells) is required at the exam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Memorization is <strong>not <\/strong>required.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are unsure of the general difficulty level we are expecting for your Part 1 piece, see the Piano Proficiency Exam Appendix (separate document) for examples.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-part-2\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 2<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the list below, choose <strong>two skills<\/strong> belonging to <strong>different groups.&nbsp; <\/strong>For instance, you could select Skills 1a and 3b (from Groups 1 and 3) or Skills 2b and 3a (Groups 2 and 3), but <em>not<\/em> Skills 1a and 1b (both from Group 1).&nbsp; Your plan for this portion of the exam (scales, excerpts, etc.) must be <strong>approved <\/strong>by the Director of Keyboard Studies at least <strong>one week<\/strong> before you attempt the exam.&nbsp; Selected examples appear in the Piano Proficiency Exam Appendix, as indicated below.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-group-1-technique\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Group 1: Technique<\/h4><h5 id=\"h-skill-1a\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skill 1a<\/h5><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be able to play the <strong>accompaniment <\/strong>for simple <strong>vocal warm-ups<\/strong> at the piano, repeating a consistent pattern and moving up\/down by half steps.&nbsp; (Singing is not required.)&nbsp; Students should prepare <strong>one ascending pattern<\/strong> <strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong> <strong>one descending pattern, <\/strong>and the ascending and descending patterns should be <strong>different patterns.<\/strong><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Any of the sample vocal warm-ups in the Appendix could qualify, but be sure you can progress through a full chromatic ascent\/descent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may also come up with other warm-up patterns, as long as they are preapproved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be sure you are playing these at a &ldquo;singable&rdquo; tempo (quarter note = 92 or faster; if vocal warmup has eighth notes, then quarter = 80 or faster is sufficient).<\/li>\n<\/ul><h5 id=\"h-skill-1b\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skill 1b<\/h5><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prepare at least <strong>three major<\/strong> and<strong> three minor scales<\/strong> <em>beyond C major\/A minor,<\/em> at least two of which should be inflat keys<em>.&nbsp; <\/em>Scales must be played <strong>hands together.&nbsp; <\/strong>Only <strong>1 octave <\/strong>is required, although 2-, 3-, and 4-octave scales are welcome as well.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>While we are not grading you on fingering, learning the standard fingerings will make playing these scales much easier.&nbsp; See the Appendix for two-octave fingering charts, which can be adapted to any other number of octaves.&nbsp; Aim for smoothness, continuity, and correct notes for all scales.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Of the six scales you prepare, the examiners will select <strong>four <\/strong>to hear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be able to play all scales at a moderate tempo (quarter note = 92 or faster).<\/li>\n<\/ul><h5 id=\"h-skill-1c\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skill 1c<\/h5><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prepare the progression I-IV-I-V-I (or i-iv-i-V-i in minor) in keyboard-style voicing in at least <strong>three major<\/strong> and<strong> three minor keys<\/strong> <em>beyond C major\/A minor.<\/em> At least two of the keys should be flat keys<em>.<\/em> For examples of acceptable voicings, see the Appendix.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aim for smoothness, continuity, and correct notes for all progressions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: initial;\">Of the six keys you prepare, the examiners will select <\/span><strong style=\"color: initial;\">four <\/strong><span style=\"color: initial;\">to hear.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be able to play your progressions in quarter notes at a moderate tempo (quarter note = 80 or faster).<\/li>\n<\/ul><h4 id=\"h-group-2-score-reading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Group 2: Score Reading<\/h4><h5 id=\"h-skill-2a\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skill 2a<\/h5><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be able to play <strong>any combination of two parts<\/strong> from a choral or string quartet score excerpt (8-16 measures).<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Appendix contains <strong>preapproved score excerpts<\/strong> from which you might choose.&nbsp; You may also find your own excerpt, as long as it is approved by the Director of Keyboard Studies before the exam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: initial;\">If you choose an SATB choral score, be sure to prepare <\/span><strong style=\"color: initial;\">all six<\/strong><span style=\"color: initial;\"> combinations:&nbsp; S + A, S + T, S + B, A + T, A + B, and T + B.&nbsp; Please read the tenor <\/span><em style=\"color: initial;\">in the proper register <\/em><span style=\"color: initial;\">(i.e., transpose tenor treble clef notes down an octave).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Similarly, if you choose a string quartet, be sure to prepare Violin I + Violin II, Violin I + Viola, Violin I + Cello, Violin II + Viola, Violin II + Cello, and Viola + Cello.&nbsp; Please read the alto clef <em>in the proper register<\/em> (where is Middle C?).<\/li>\n<\/ul><h5 id=\"h-skill-2b\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skill 2b<\/h5><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be able to play, at <em>concert pitch<\/em>, <strong>any line<\/strong> from a band\/orchestral score excerpt (8-16 measures) containing transposing instruments.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Appendix contains <strong>preapproved score excerpts<\/strong> from which you might choose.&nbsp; You may also find your own excerpt, as long as it is approved by the Director of Keyboard Studies before the exam.&nbsp; Your chosen excerpt should contain at least two transposing instruments and at least three independent (i.e., non-unison) musical lines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The examiners may choose <strong>any instrumental line <\/strong>from the score you select, so be sure to practice every line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For a summary of common instrumental transpositions and tips on playing transposing lines, see the charts given in the Appendix.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h4 id=\"h-group-3-improvisation-and-transposition\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Group 3: Improvisation and Transposition<\/h4><h5 id=\"h-skill-3a\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skill 3a<\/h5><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be able to play a right hand <strong>melodic improvisation<\/strong> over a left hand chord progression.&nbsp; The improvisation must satisfy the following requirements:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Underlying chord progression should be <strong>8-16 bars long.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: initial;\">Underlying chord progression should contain <\/span><strong style=\"color: initial;\">at least 3 distinct chords<\/strong><span style=\"color: initial;\"> (e.g., a progression consisting only of I and V chords would not qualify).&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: initial;\">Improvisation must incorporate <\/span><strong style=\"color: initial;\">at least one distinctive rhythmic idea\/motive, <\/strong><span style=\"color: initial;\">which should appear <\/span><strong style=\"color: initial;\">several times<\/strong><span style=\"color: initial;\"> in the improvisation.<\/span><strong style=\"color: initial;\">&nbsp; <\/strong><span style=\"color: initial;\">See the <\/span><strong style=\"color: initial;\">Appendix<\/strong><span style=\"color: initial;\"> for examples of rhythmic motives in various common meters.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plan to perform <strong>2-3 &ldquo;rounds&rdquo;<\/strong> of improvising over your chosen chord progression.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>12-bar blues progression<\/strong> automatically qualifies for the chord progression.&nbsp; Here is a summary:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>4\/4:&nbsp; I | I | I | I | IV | IV | I | I | V | IV | I | I :||<\/li>\n<\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may also use a jazz standard, a folk song, the &ldquo;Rhythm changes,&rdquo; an original progression, etc. as the basis for your improvisation, as long as it is preapproved.<\/p><h5 id=\"h-skill-3b\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skill 3b<\/h5><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be able to play the arrangement of &ldquo;Happy Birthday to You&rdquo; given in the Appendix in the original key AND in one other chosen key no more than a minor third higher or lower.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may only have the original score in front of you for the exam (not a transposed score).<\/p><h2 id=\"h-grading-scheme\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grading Scheme<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The examiners will apply the following grading scheme to each exam performance.&nbsp; A student must receive a grade of &ldquo;Pass&rdquo; on <strong>Parts 1 <em>and<\/em> 2 <\/strong>to pass the exam overall:<\/p><h3 id=\"h-pass\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pass<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student demonstrates <strong>satisfactory to exceptional keyboard proficiency. <\/strong>&nbsp;The Part 1 performance is generally smooth, with a consistent tempo and possibly a few minor mistakes.&nbsp; An attempt has been made to observe expressive markings, dynamics, and articulation indications.&nbsp; The Part 2 skills (scales, score reading, etc.) may contain a few errors, but the student demonstrates basic mastery of the skills and obvious preparation.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-borderline\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Borderline<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student demonstrates <strong>some level of proficiency,<\/strong> but demonstrates <strong>notable weaknesses<\/strong> during the exam, either due to nerves or lack of adequate preparation.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A student receiving a Borderline grade may spend an additional day or two practicing and then retry the part(s) of the exam that received this grade.&nbsp; The second attempt will either receive a Pass or Not Pass grade (another Borderline-level performance will not be sufficient to pass the exam).<\/p><h3 id=\"h-not-pass\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not Pass<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student demonstrates a <strong>low level of keyboard proficiency,<\/strong> with errors that demonstrate a <strong>lack of basic competency <\/strong>(rather than a &ldquo;bad day,&rdquo; which a Borderline score might imply).<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A student receiving a Not Pass grade <em>on either portion of the exam<\/em> (Part 1 or Part 2) may not attempt the exam again until the following semester.&nbsp; The student must then retake the part(s) of the exam that they did not pass.&nbsp; If the student is a graduating senior, they may retake the exam after a few days, at the discretion of the faculty, to fulfill graduation requirements.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note: <\/strong>If the student makes notable mistakes during the exam, the examiners will ask them to replay the problematic portions and try to fix these mistakes.&nbsp; If the student cannot fix the mistakes when prompted, a Borderline or Not Pass grade may result.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guidelines: Piano Proficiency Exam majors try all of these.&nbsp; But you don&rsquo;t have to major or minor to study it at UMW.&nbsp; You can concentrate on whatever interests you most.&nbsp; For example:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hone your singing or instrumental skills in private lessons and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/umwmusic.com\/performance-ensembles\/\">ensemble<\/a>&nbsp;rehearsals with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/umwmusic.com\/people\/\">outstanding faculty<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perform for the university community&ndash;or on tour regionally or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eagleeye.umw.edu\/2012\/01\/19\/umw-philharmonic-orchestra-tours-italy\/\">internationally<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn audio recording and production techniques<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Train your brain in music theory courses to perceive what your ears hear and to imagine what might be possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compose your own music:&nbsp; a UMW student&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/2015\/06\/22\/umw-student-wins-young-composer-award\/\">won a national composition prize<\/a>&nbsp;recently<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn the sitar or mridangam, in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/umwmusic.com\/indian-music-ensemble\/\">Indian Music Ensemble<\/a>, or jazz improvisation, or bagpipes and drums for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/umweaglepipeband.com\/\">Eagle Pipe Band<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.settlingscoresblog.net\/2019\/05\/43-seen-and-not-heard.html\">historical narratives<\/a>&nbsp;that continue to shape our perceptions of the music we love (or love to hate)<\/li>\n<\/ul><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" children&ndash;language acquisition, fine motor skills, developing self-discipline and cooperative skills, improved concentration&ndash;all skills that is helpful to have in college, regardless of your major.&nbsp; Students who study music tend to do better taking tests in any discipline&ndash;maybe because they become accustomed to performing under pressure?&nbsp; We notice, too, that the student leaders on campus tend to be involved in the music programs here.&nbsp; They make time for it because it is worth their time.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/umwmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Matt_05-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:172px;height:auto\"><\/figure>\n<\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>MATT TOVAR<\/strong><br>UMW &rsquo;19<br>George Washington University School of Medicine<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>As the only Biochemistry major in my diatonic music theory class, I at first felt that I was the &ldquo;outsider&rdquo; in the group. I spoke the languages of Chemical Anisotropy and Enzymatic Entropy while my peers spoke of Overtones and Harmonic Minors. Regardless of our different backgrounds, it was the beauty of music that quickly united us. Music isn&rsquo;t limited to just concert halls and staff paper. It holds a special place in our memories, experiences, and society as a whole. I think that music is worth studying at Mary Washington because&ndash;regardless of your course of study&ndash;knowing more about it can be an integral tool of communication that can be used to Community Orchestra was founded by Dr. James Baker in 1970, and now for more than 50 years has served as a vital public face for the university and for the music department.&nbsp; From the start, the ensemble brought together student, faculty, and community musicians in order to perform orchestral repertoire together&ndash;on campus and elsewhere (in Carnegie Hall, in various cities in the United Walford Scholarship in Music<\/h3><p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">This scholarship is awarded to music majors or to students who intend to major in music. Entering freshmen must audition since performance skills are a major factor in determining the award. Advanced students, sophomores and above, must have an overall 3.0 GPA and an average 3.2 GPA in their major. It was established in 1976 by the estate of Aurelia B. Walford.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-henry-and-grace-spicer-philharmonic-scholarship\">Henry and Grace Spicer Philharmonic Scholarship<\/h3><p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The scholarship is awarded annually to a student with a major in music or to a student who is a member of the UMW Philharmonic Orchestra. The UMW Jazz Ensemble performs contemporary jazz arrangements as well as standard big band literature. Members receive instruction in performance techniques, jazz history, theory, improvisation, and an analysis of elements of style and interpretation of music found within the jazz idiom. The Ensemble performs for various events on and off campus. Major concerts are presented each semester. In the fall the ensemble presents the&nbsp;<em><strong>Jazz 4 Justice&trade;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>concert and in the spring the UMW Jazz Ensemble hosts the annual&nbsp;<strong>UMW Jazz Festival<\/strong>, performing with national and international &ldquo;name&rdquo; Jazz Artists. Within this ensemble&nbsp;are smaller groups that perform at various events on and off campus. fundamentals of Indian music theory, including the basics of <i>raga<\/i> and <i>tala<\/i>, and rudimentary instrumental and vocal performance techniques.&nbsp; Students then apply these skills to performances of Carnatic and Hindustani musical works, incorporating traditional Indian instruments such as the tambura, mridangam, naal, ghatam, violin, Carnatic flute, tabla, and sitar.<\/p><figure
