(1972) in mathematics and science from Marietta College (Ohio). His first teaching position was at the University of Iowa in 1989. Dr. Somma’s primary expertise was in American art history and public sculpture, especially in Washington, D.C. He had been selected to be the 2008-09 Dorothy K. Hohenberg Chair of Excellence in Art History at the University of Memphis and received numerous other awards and fellowships, including a listing in the 2007-08 Marquis Who’s Who in American Art and was the recipient of the first United States Capitol Historical Fellowship in 1986-87. Tom Somma lost his second brave battle against cancer and died at home, in the company of his beloved wife, Marie, on May 10, 2007. class="wp-block-paragraph">As a Museum Studies minor at the University of Mary Washington, I had the opportunity to work on projects at several museums during my time in college. The summer before my senior year, I was fortunate enough to intern at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation as a Family Programs Interpreter. I was one of three interns based at the Geddy House on the Palace Green, where we taught and interpreted 18th century colonial and Native-American games. I also was trained to give tours of the Geddy House and Wythe House. The Wythe House was where we interpreted the gardens and animals as part of additional children’s programming.

When my internship ended, my supervisors at the Wythe/Geddy sites expressed an interest in my returning to the same position as a paid employee the following summer. After graduation, I was ecstatic at the chance to return to Williamsburg and continue working in Family Programming. I had come to love interpreting 18th-century family life and the unique experience of first-person interpretation, which was something that greatly interested me during my studies at the University of Mary Washington.

Rachel Icard (middle) and her coworkers Terry Yemm (R) and Lora Moyer (L) at Colonial Williamsburg

At the end of my first post-graduation summer, I was hired as a full-time Site Interpreter for the Wythe/Geddy Domestic Sites Ensemble. I am responsible for interpreting 18th-century family life accurately and “in-the-moment,” an interpretive technique that is challenging yet rewarding. I am currently working in this position and hope to perhaps cross-train within the Foundation for school and groups or public sites in the next few years. As an intern, I served as the Director of Museum Operations and oversaw not only the house museum itself, but the volunteer docent staff and tour scheduling as well.

The experience gained from this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has helped deepen my love of history, art, museum collections, and General Marshall himself. My duties included interpreting the historic landscape of both the house and the grounds to the public, designing interactive exhibits, including one for the 70th anniversary of the Marshall Plan; planning events, and even creating an archive from scratch! The small size of the museum allowed me to try my hand at a number of different projects, which made my time there all the more rewarding.

My goal was to change the way the public saw a House Museum. I sought to bring General Marshall’s legacy to the forefront of the community’s mind by removing stanchions along the tour path, asking visitors to critique tour operations, emphasizing community outreach, improving social media presence, and focusing on the visitor experience. I am excited to use what I learn to continue my studies at the University of Mary Washington and learn even more!

Lindsey Crawford:

It is hard to describe my excitement upon reading the email offering me a summer internship at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington DC. Ever since declaring my minor in museum studies, I had the goal of interning at the Smithsonian before graduating from college. I started small by first completing three internships at local museums so I had a fighting chance at receiving a Smithsonian internship, which are highly competitive, particularly during the summer. My strategy worked well and I was elated to find out that I was offered an internship at the newest Smithsonian museum, where I could not even get tickets to go as a visitor! This is how, during the summer before my senior year, I joined the Public Programs Department team at NMAAHC.

This kind of museum work was new to me. I got to help with the final touches on the program “The Newark Rebellion of 1967: A Historic Moment Considered,” a series of panel discussions that was a huge hit with the public, given the 300+ visitors in attendance. However, my biggest accomplishment would have to be that of creating a hands-on activity for visitors of an exhibition including a timeline of slavery. I worked with designers at the museum and it was amazing to see my ideas come to life through the design process! Above all, I had the chance to see how what I learned in all my museum studies classes comes together in a real museum, especially because public programs incorporate design, marketing, PR, education, and many other aspects. It is one thing to read or talk about these and it is another to really see them in action.

This internship gave me an opportunity to learn more not only about museum work but also African American history and culture. I feel more appreciative of both, but know I still have more to learn.

Cara Dudley:

I spent the summer before my last semester at the University of Mary Washington interning for the Education Department at the National Museum of the Marine Corps (NMMC). I would say this internship was the highlight of my summer and every day at work I did what I love. As a new intern, I was first introduced to all of the other departments and later I had the chance to collaborate with staff members from the entire museum. I also had the honor to meet the director and deputy director of the organization.

My duties were diverse but very enjoyable. Primarily, I assisted the summer camps at the museum. Interacting with camp participants of different ages was very rewarding and getting thank-you cards from campers always made my day. I also conducted research for “discovery carts, “ which are small collections of objects to present to visitors along with scripts that interpret those objects for enhancement of knowledge and experience. Last but not least, I served as the designated photographer of the summer camps and the pictures I took will be featured in promotional materials and on social media.

In the presentation I gave to staff members at the end of the internship I expressed my gratitude for the learning opportunity I was given. My interest in museum education stems from a class on this topic I took in my junior year at UMW and this internship in the Education Department at NMMC definitely helped me make the decision to enter this field.

Jessica Schmitt:

The summer in between my junior and senior years at the University of Mary Washington, I had the opportunity to intern with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The Museum and Archives Center on campus houses approximately 500,000 items dating back to the 1850s. The items relate to the American conservation movement and the history of wildlife management in the United States.

During my internship, I mostly focused on accessioning and cataloging new items into the archives, inventorying historic objects, photographs, and papers, and digitizing the USFWS historic film collection. Although museum and archive staff were always there to answer any questions I may have had, they trusted me to do the work on my own, which made me feel confident my abilities. Being able to touch, handle, and look at historic objects is such a spiritual experience and working with so many artifacts made this internship amazing. Not only did I get to learn more about the daily routine of a museum/archive and the U.S. conservation movement and wildlife management history, but I was also able to build professional relationships with all the staff, especially with the Chief Curator and Chief Historian.

To conclude, this internship solidified dreams to work in a museum/archive in the future. Throughout the summer I was tasked with giving numerous tours and even got the chance to create a children’s program for a major local event, the Civil War Weekend. Throughout the summer, I cataloged over two hundred objects, ranging from musical instruments and uniforms, to miscellaneous items like cigars and toasting glasses. Cataloging for the NMMC included creating an acquisition report complete with information about the object, its donor, and photos of the object now and when it was used. Because the Marine Band had such a wide array of objects, the research portion of the cataloging process was the most difficult, yet most rewarding, part of my internship. In addition to these reports, I also assisted with tours of the Marine Band Library and presented my acquisition reports before the NMMC Collections Committee at their monthly meetings. The skills I learned in this process will be beneficial not only in my future professional career, but also during the rest of my academic training at UMW.

As a long-time musician, the decision to not major in music at UMW was not easy to make. I knew in my heart that a career in the museum field is what I have always wanted, so I chose to follow that instinct. This internship allowed me to combine my two passions for music and museums and hone the skills I have already learned as a historic preservation major. I will be forever grateful for the National Museum of the Marine Corps, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, and the United States Marine Band for making a few of my dreams come true.

Internship ExperiencesOne of the requirements of all Museum Studies minors is to pursue a 3-credit internship at one of the many museum-related institutions in our area or beyond. Museum Studies minors are also required to meet with their advisors as part of the internship selection process to ensure that students choose an appropriate internship experience. Mentors who work in the museum field are required for all internships. Your advisor and the chair of the Museum Studies Committee must approve all internships. For more information, please visit Internship Requirements.

Students should review the Museum Studies Minor Requirements.

SIGNING UP FOR THE MINOR:

1 — In order to enroll in the minor, students must first meet with a member of the Museum Studies Committee who is from their major department (see below) and discuss the requirements in the minor. This faculty will serve as their minor advisor. If a student’s major is not listed, they must contact Dr. Kelli Slunt, who will go over the requirements with them and serve as a faculty advisor in the minor.

2 — Students will then declare the minor by electronically filling in the Minor Declaration Form.

MUSEUM STUDIES COMMITTEE:

Anthropology: Eric Gable

Chemistry: Kelli Slunt

Historic Preservation: Cristina Turdean (Committee Chair)

History and American Studies: Erin Devlin

James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library: Scott Harris

CURRICULUM (18 Credits)

Required courses (6 credits): Art History 315 or Historic Preservation 200 or American Studies 306 AND Art History 317 or Historic Preservation 463 or History 425;

Elective courses (9 credits) from among Anthropology 309, 341, 342; Art History 460 and IDIS 350S; Classics 380; Historic Preservation 208, 303, 313, 317, 320, 323; History 330, 428; special topics courses with approval, including American Studies 350, Anthropology 371 or 481, Art History 470, Classics 351/352, Historic Preservation 471, or History 300 and 471; and, Art History 317 or Historic Preservation 463 or History 425 if not used to satisfy one of the requirements above. Part of the work for this course includes creating an online exhibition on the art of Bernini.

Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) was acclaimed by his contemporaries as a rare genius. He was active as a sculptor before the age of nine, and his earliest works demonstrate a dazzling understanding of technique and a remarkable sense of style. Like many of his predecessors, he was the son of an artist, and he studied in the workshop of his father. This early socialization within the business of sculpture may explain Gianlorenzo’s artistic direction, but nothing really explains the child’s amazing comprehension of his craft and his meteoric rise. The aristocracy of church and state called upon Bernini to give physical form to their visions of grandeur, both spiritual and secular. In architecture, sculpture, painting, and theater, Bernini expressed for his patrons their own sense of wonder, accomplishment, and sheer power. There was no other artist in the seventeenth century who could so completely fulfill the needs of the age of Absolutism.

ARTH 470Z: Venice (3)

This course meets the following requirements: Writing Intensive, Global Inquiry, and satisfies an elective requirement in Museum Studies. Part of the work for this course includes creating an online exhibit on the city of Venice.

In this course we will examine Venetian art and culture from the foundation of the city in the 5th and 6th centuries through today. The lagoon and islands of the city will hold our attention for the first several meetings as we explore geography, politics, business, and urban issues that are particular to Venice. We will then turn to the artists whose works define the city for art historians, including the following from the fifteenth through eighteenth centuries: the Bellini family, Giorgione, Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, and the Tiepolo family. This seminar explores the larger issues that surround the evolving concepts of tourism—from the 19th century view embodied in Charles M. Doughty’s Travels in Arabia Deserta to heritage corridors and theme parks. Implicit in “heritage tourism” is the experience of interactions with people different than ourselves, not for their heroic qualities, but for their knowledge, values and aesthetic shared among the people of a community or culture and embodied in their artifacts. The personal automobile and the democratization of leisure time transformed the tourist experience from an idle of the wealthy, to a passion of the working classes. As a multi-disciplinary study, Historic Preservation has staked its reputation with the public on the authenticity of its results. This seminar seeks to explore the formulas for presenting and representing heritage in an authentic experience to the public as crucial to our role as mediators between the objects of the past and the recreation industry that seeks to employ heritage as a tourism engine.

463 – Laboratory in Museum Design and Interpretation (3) Prerequisite: HISP 200 or ARTH 315 or AMST 306 and permission of instructor. Examination of the principles of museum exhibit design and interpretation, including participation in exhibit preparation.

471 – Special Studies in Historic Preservation

471YY: Grant Writing (3) This course is on overview of the basic principles and practices of grant writing, including needs assessment, identifying potential funding sources, creating goals, and identifying assessment plans.
