“Food is Everything We Are” – Anthony Bourdain<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Food Studies is an interdisciplinary minor that provides insight into the relationships between food and all aspects of the human experience. The program offers a wide variety of courses, including classes from the business, natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. This minor complements all majors offered at the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minor Requirements<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Eighteen (18) credit hours from the following list of courses, one of which must be AMST 204 American Foodways, which is offered annually, and IDIS 480, Food Studies Capstone, a 3-credit, independent study under the guidance of a faculty member and approved by the program coordinator. Other courses with relevant content may be substituted with approval of the program coordinator. No more than three (3) courses from a single discipline may be applied toward satisfying the minor. At least three (3) courses must be at the 300\/400 level, and no more than two (2) courses in the minor may overlap with any other major or minor. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>

Students with previous Intermediate proficiency will advance during the course of studies to, at least, the Advanced-Low level while acquiring specialized vocabulary, structures, and language pragmatics typically found in the medical field. Graduates will be able to apply their knowledge as nurses, nurse-practitioners, physicians, medical administrators, and front-office staff in medical offices. eligible to apply for the <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/theglobalseal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">Global Seal of Biliteracy<\/a> in their senior year before graduating.<\/p><p>To qualify, students will need the following:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Completion of at least 3 courses at the 300-400 level. At least one of these courses must also be designated WI, and at least one designated SI<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span class=\"\"> <\/span>A GPA of 3.5 in these advanced language courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completion of the AVANT Stamp 4S competency exam. This exam has a nominal cost (currently about $20). The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is able to cover the cost of this exam for a limited number of students with financial need. The Global Seal of Biliteracy enables programs across the world to quickly validate a student’s language skills to provide recognition, appropriate and or advanced placement in a language program, and even help earn scholarships and job opportunities.<\/p><p>The Global Seal of Biliteracy allows employers to easily verify our students’ language skills and be confident that they possess valuable soft skills linked to language learners. We believe language credentials will result in pay differentials and increased employment opportunities for bilinguals. scholarship is awarded annually to a rising junior or senior with a declared major in French. The average annual award budget is $4,500. Individual scholarship award amounts may vary. It was established by Charles R. Neatrour, Ed.D. in 2003 to honor the memory of his wife, Dr. Elizabeth Baylor Neatrour ’54, and one of her professors, Dr. Mary Ellen Stephenson. Elizabeth Neatrour taught French at James Madison University for nearly 40 years. Dr. Mary Ellen Stephenson, was associate professor of Spanish at Mary Washington for more than 30 years and was the class sponsor for the Class of 1954.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fita-rivas-in-spanish\">Fita Rivas in Spanish: <\/h2><p>The scholarship is awarded to junior or senior Spanish majors planning to continue their studies in graduate school.
