Students who have taken advanced courses in one of our 7 languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish) are eligible to apply for the Global Seal of Biliteracy<\/a> in their senior year before graduating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To qualify, students will need the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Completion of at least 3 courses at the 300-400 level. At least one of these courses must also be designated WI, and at least one designated SI<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. \u00a0<\/span>A GPA of 3.5 in these advanced language courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Completion of the AVANT Stamp 4S competency exam. This exam has a nominal cost (currently about $20). The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is able to cover the cost of this exam for a limited number of students with financial need. Students should indicate on the application form that they need assistance with this cost.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Depending on the competency exam score, students can qualify for a “Functional Fluency Award” or “Working Fluency Award.” Students interested in achieving the “Professional Fluency Award” should contact the MLL department chair for test requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Students who earn this award will be recognized at our annual reception for MLL majors and minors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What is the Global Seal of Biliteracy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The Global Seal of Biliteracy is an international credential that conveys proficiency with language skills in two or more languages for our qualifying candidates. The Global Seal of Biliteracy enables programs across the world to quickly validate a student\u2019s language skills to provide recognition, appropriate and or advanced placement in a language program, and even help earn scholarships and job opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Global Seal of Biliteracy allows employers to easily verify our students\u2019 language skills and be confident that they possess valuable soft skills linked to language learners. We believe language credentials will result in pay differentials and increased employment opportunities for bilinguals. The Global Seal of Biliteracy is serial-numbered and can be added to a resume or LinkedIn under “Licenses & Certifications.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
