Coleman, Sara<\/h2>

Tell us about your education and\/or career path since graduating from UMW. What is your current role? How did your time at UMW prepare you for your career?<\/strong>
Since graduating, I’ve been employed at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, where I had an internship the summer before my senior year. NSWCDD paid for some of my tuition and books my senior year, as well as my Masters of Engineering degree from Old Dominion University, which I completed remotely while working full-time. I’m currently the Missile Integration Project Lead, doing systems and mechanical engineering for US Naval missile launching platforms. While I’m not doing much, if any, pure math these days, my time at UMW certainly helped pave the way for my career by teaching me how to think critically, interact with lots of different people, and ultimately how to learn. <\/p>

What class or UMW experience did you have that has been surprisingly useful to you in your career path?<\/strong>
I worked as a stage carpenter for the Theater Department for 3 years, and although the actual work has nothing to do with my degrees or my career, I think regularly being around people with different interests and personalities from me was really valuable. I learned how to get out of my comfort zone, how to take charge of a group, and how to divide up work and make sure a project got completed.<\/p>

What non-math skill did you acquire at UMW that has been helpful in your life after UMW?<\/strong>
I think the most important thing I learned from UMW is that there is a lot of knowledge and information out there, and the more you can absorb, the better. The beauty of a liberal arts degree is the wide breadth of learning you’re exposed to, and I think that’s really helped me be adaptable in my career and everyday life. <\/p>

What advice do you have for a current or prospective student?<\/strong>
Try everything. Take a class just because it sounds interesting, sign up for tons of clubs, and go to all the on-campus events. Push yourself, not only academically, but also socially. Learn as much as you can from the great environment you’re in, and have fun!<\/p>

What is your current role? How did your time at UMW prepare you for your career?<\/strong><\/p><p>I am currently going to NC State University to obtain my Master of Statistics. I also work at Vericast as a Marketing Scientist where I set up statistical experiments to serve ads and explore\/write code to improve our methods. My time at UMW prepared me for my career because it allowed me to explore what I was most interested in while also preparing me for after college. A lot of professors cared about where I was going next which was very helpful in the transition after graduation.<\/p><p><strong>Tell us about your involvement in undergraduate research with math faculty. How did you initiate that experience?<\/strong><\/p><p>My undergraduate research with Dr. Denhere was my favorite part throughout all of undergrad. It started with me coming to her and asking her to be my advisor on the research and presenting my idea to her. We spent all fall and spring semester meeting with each other, bouncing ideas off of each other and putting together my thesis (plugging it right here, check it out “Using a Distributive Approach to Model Insurance Loss”). The best part was that it was something that really interested me which made it that much more exciting.<\/p><p><strong>What class or UMW experience did you have that has been surprisingly useful to you in your career path?<\/strong><\/p><p>I think the overall critical thinking that you gain at UMW, specifically in the math department has been surprisingly useful in my career path. I feel that I’ve accelerated quicker and accomplished more in my job and also grad school because there were always instances in undergrad where I was challenged to think outside the box or look at something in a different light. I’ve applied that to what I do now, and it has been really helpful.<\/p><p><strong>What was your favorite or most challenging math course?<\/strong><\/p><p>The most challenging math course I took was Real Analysis I & II. However, I will say that it was the most exciting because it was so neat to prove almost every math\/calculus concept you had learned up that point!<\/p><p><strong>What non-math skill did you acquire at UMW that has been helpful in your life after UMW?<\/strong><\/p><p>Communication is an important skill I learned at UMW that has helped me in my overall life. I learned to speak up for myself by communicating my thoughts and expressing my ideas but also learned how to listen to other’s in order to come up with a solution.<\/p><p><strong>What advice do you have for a current or prospective student?<\/strong><\/p><p>Advice I have for current or prospective students is don’t be afraid to take chances. Don’t be afraid to try out that class or express that “crazy” idea that you’ve been holding onto. A quote that I heard recently is by Neale Donald Walsch and he said, ‘Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.’ I love this because not only does it speak to me personally, but you really never know what you’re capable of if you don’t give it a chance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kayla KippesTell us about your education and\/or career path since graduating from UMW. What is your current role?<\/strong><br>After graduating from the University of Mary Washington in 2016 with a major in mathematics and a minor in computer science, I entered the University of Virginia’s mathematics Ph.D. program. Under the careful guidance of my advisor Dr. Nicholas J. Kuhn I successfully proved a new result, bundled my 165-page thesis together, and graduated with my Ph.D. in the Spring of 2021.<br>After graduating I began work as a mathematician for the Federal Aviation Administration. In this role I work on improving the efficiency of the National Airspace System. I have had the opportunity to travel internationally to conferences and present papers.<\/p><p><strong>Tell us about your involvement in undergraduate research with math faculty. How did you initiate that experience?<\/strong><br>During my final year, Dr. Helmstutler approached me about the prospect of working on an undergraduate honors thesis. This opportunity gives the student a tiny taste of what writing a Ph.D. might be like. The research problem was in the area of non-commutative cryptography. Most modern cryptography relies on the key fact that you can multiply two numbers and b as either ab or ba and get the same thing. This area of research tries to figure out how to make cryptography work using a’s and b’s where ab is not equal to ba. The hope would be that this might yield a stronger form of encryption.<br>The key takeaway from my experience doing undergraduate research is perseverance. Most problems (in math and life) do not have solutions, and for those that do, you have to work hard.<\/p><p><strong>What advice do you have for a current or prospective student?<\/strong><br>University of Mary Washington is an excellent place to be exposed to lots of different subjects. Even if you think you know what you want to study, it is still worth taking subjects out of your comfort zone. My biggest regret in my undergraduate career was not taking enough statistics courses.<\/p><p><strong>How did your time at UMW prepare you for your career?<\/strong><br>I am of the opinion that a degree in mathematics teaches you how to think clearly and articulate yourself. This skill is completely transferable to any domain. A mathematician is constantly asking themselves questions like “are these assumptions true?”, “do I need all of these assumptions?”, “what happens if I remove this constraint?” This is why math majors are very hirable.<\/p><p><strong>What non-math skill did you acquire at UMW that has been helpful in your life after UMW?<\/strong><br>Collaboration and communication skills. At its core, math is about communicating ideas effectively and clearly. You may have come up with the best idea ever, but if no one can understand it, then it is of no use. Studying math can be a lot of fun, especially if you form a group of math major friends to study together with. Graduated Magna Cum Laude with departmental honors; UMW Swim Team, Captain; Relay for Life Committee Member<\/p><p><strong>Favorite Course:<br><\/strong>Foundations of Mathematics…It’s not required, but really should be!<\/p><p><strong>Memorable Experiences in the Classroom:<br><\/strong>Writing and defending an honors thesis on Anti-Blocking Sets with my advisor, Dr. Keith Mellinger, is one of my most proud academic achievements. On a different note, I also really enjoyed being apart of the selection process for hiring a new professor my junior year. By getting involved in the math department I was able to attend various talks\/lectures and then go to dinner afterwards with the candidates.<\/p><p><strong>Memorable Experiences Outside the Classroom:<br><\/strong>Participating in Relay for Life and watching hundreds of college kids stay up all night and play games for a great cause!<\/p><p><strong>Why Should Somebody Study Mathematics at UMW?<br><\/strong>The professors are great!  And a degree in mathematics is very respected because of the way it shapes your brain to tackle complex and difficult problems. My advice would be to take advantage of the smaller class sizes at UMW and really get to know your professors and peers. Go to office hours, ask a ton of questions, and work with your classmates. It was so interesting and fun to take, and I would recommend it to any student!<\/p><p><strong>Memorable Experiences in the Classroom:<br><\/strong>Dr. Chiang gesturing with her hands while teaching Differential Equations, and the chalk flying across the classroom. Drawing on the spheres in Dr. Mellinger’s Modern Geometry class and having my hands turn black and blue from the markers. Listening to all the Math jokes and stories from the professors…the list just goes on and on. I would not have changed it for the world!<\/p><p><strong>Memorable Experiences Outside the Classroom:<br><\/strong>Dr. Lee offered me the chance to do research with him and Rebecca Presor during the Summer Science Institute. This was a great opportunity for me to learn how to conduct research and present the results to my peers. I was later able to participate in the SUMS conference at JMU and the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Boston, MA. I had so much fun at these events, because I got to spend time with the Mathematics professors and other students outside the classroom.<\/p><p><strong>Why Should Somebody Study Mathematics at UMW?<br><\/strong>The main reason that someone should study Mathematics at UMW is the faculty. The professors are an awesome group! They are always available to help their students whenever they need it. Students have the chance to do research with a professor, present a talk or poster presentation at conferences based on their research, and opportunities to obtain scholarships. I also like how small the class sizes are, because students get one-on-one attention from their professors. Having such a knowledgeable and thorough adviser prepared me for my current job, and I was able to learn so much from him and about him. I also loved participating in Mathfest and the Joint Mathematics Meetings because I got to spend time with mathematics professors and students outside the classroom, and I got to see how vast and interesting the world of research is. I had never even considered the mathematics behind juggling before last year!<\/p><p><strong>Why should somebody study mathematics at UMW?<br><\/strong>The main reason I would encourage somebody to study mathematics at UMW is the professors. They are intelligent, genuine, and welcoming people, and truly the best teachers I have ever had. They will teach you that learning is interesting and fun, but also hard work. They have high standards for what they consider to be quality work, but they are eager to help you reach these standards. Not only this, but the class sizes in the math department are small, which is a crucial aspect of a learning environment.
