This has been my summer job since 2016, but I have spent every summer, and sometimes all year, in Colonial Williamsburg since I was nine years old. Brick-making involves digging up natural clay from a local source, treading in the clay with your bare feet, molding the clay into a two-brick mold, setting them out in the sun to dry, moving them under a waterproof cover, and then firing all of them at once in November. This is not a hard trade to learn, but it is a hard trade to get used to.

These questions and comments were frustrating, and I wanted to find solid evidence that I could use to answer these questions. Creating an internship was an easy way to address these issues. I asked my major supervisor, Dr. Moon, to look over my work and my job supervisor to approve my hours, along with providing me with time to research. Every week, I spent my Monday mornings visiting with other women working in trades at Colonial Williamsburg, discussing the research they had done, and looking at their resources. After researching, I wrote up a journal entry about what I had found and sent it to Dr. Moon. At the end of my internship, I had found information about a few different women in trades and wrote a long reflection paper about the experience and the information I had found. I also discovered several women working in trades around the Chesapeake Bay Region during the colonial period who were trailblazers for change and empowerment.

The information that I found during this internship helped at work because I was able to answer questions about women working in eighteenth-century Williamsburg, and my coworkers often turned to me to answer these questions since I had done the research. I loved this experience and I loved being able to bring an educational aspect to my job. Working in a brickyard is tough, but so very rewarding especially when you can change people’s minds about women working in trades that we usually believe are male-dominated.

Mackenzie Hard In Spring 2018, I decided to create my own internship, which involved returning to my usual summer job working in the brickyard at Colonial Williamsburg. Dino’s enrollment at UMW began at the age of 29 after having served on active duty in the United States Air Force for over nine years as a paralegal. He was also married (to a UMW alumna) and had an infant daughter at the time. Dino chose UMW because of its high-quality professors, small class sizes, and overall learning environment, to include its beautiful campus and diverse student body.

Dino arrived at UMW in the fall of 2014 with the career goal of becoming a high school social studies teacher. He graduated from UMW in May 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts in history (Summa Cum Laude) and enrolled in Shenandoah University’s Career Switcher Program in the fall. After finishing the first phase of the program, Dino achieved his career goal of becoming a social studies teacher at Stafford High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Dino currently teaches Advanced Placement United States Government and Politics and Honors World History and Geography I. The variety of history courses that he completed throughout his undergraduate degree at UMW exposed him to many of the topics within the curriculum that he is required to teach. Even more important were the analytical and writing skills that Dino developed, which he works to instill in his students.

Dino has excelled as a teacher and was recognized as a finalist for First Class Teacher of the Year for Stafford County Public Schools in 2019. He truly enjoys his newfound profession and sharing his passion of history with students, and especially looks forward to announcing home football games.

Daniel “Dino” ReschkePosition: Social Studies Teacher at Stafford High SchoolField: EducationGraduated: 2017 with a B.A. in HistoryDaniel “Dino” Reschke was not a traditional student at the University of Mary Washington (UMW). In 2017, I interviewed Chief Anne Richardson for an oral history program, “Life Along the Rappahannock,” a collaborative project between Friends of the Rappahannock and the UMW Department of History and American Studies. My graduate research grew out of this work, and while at VCU I secured grant funding for three additional oral histories. This spring I’m working with the Rappahannock community on grant funding that will underwrite research for their 100th anniversary as an incorporated Tribe, taking place in 2021. I’m also working with Tribal elders on a virtual museum exhibit utilizing the oral history videos and archival photographs from my graduate research. Throughout my time in college I bounced around from a few different majors (Business, English, Political Science, etc.) just trying to get a degree until I decided on the only subject that I enjoyed – history. While I had planned on going into Law Enforcement early on in my college days, I did not anticipate a history degree contributing to my future field… and was I wrong. The knowledge, skills and abilities learned while earning a history degree from UMW have transitioned over into my everyday work life. The UMW History and American Studies department focuses on honing its students’ writing, speaking, and presentation abilities – all of which I’ve used in my career as a State Trooper. My education from UMW helped me succeed in earning a Master’s Degree in Public Safety Leadership and Administration from Arizona State University and my professors from UMW were crucial in my acceptance to their program.

My previous job revolved around facts and providing clear and articulate accounts of events. From writing reports, testifying in court, interviewing persons, or presenting to other officers or the public, UMW laid the foundation of what has made me successful in my career as a Law Enforcement Officer. As I transition from uniformed policing to a different type of law enforcement, I anticipate the skills and knowledge I gained from an education in the UMW History and American Studies department will continue to help me be successful in my career.

Shoutouts to Dr. Jason Sellers, Dr. Claudine Ferrell, Dr. Jess Rigelhaupt, Dr. Steven Harris, and Dr. Ed Pompeian who all taught classes that had an impact on the successes I’ve had in my life and career.

Jack R.
