The University of Mary Washington Center for Historic Preservation<\/a> is proud to award this year’s Book<\/span> Prize<\/span> to Detroit Remains<\/i><\/a>, by Krysta Ryzewski. Detroit Remains<\/i> is a collection of six case studies in Detroit, Michigan, ranging from bootlegging, a log cabin, jazz site, and Detroit counterculture. This well-researched book<\/span> masterfully blends an archaeological approach to historic preservation. Dr. Ryzewski highlights the crucial importance of community engagement – and student involvement – in effective documentation and action. The book<\/span> engages economically, socially, and racially diverse groups, and emphasizes the relevance of recent history, which is still underrepresented in the literature.\"Cover<\/a><\/p>

<\/div>
Detroit Remains<\/i> highlights how history can be reassembled even when the physical site is already lost. Dr. Ryzewski also emphasizes that some mystery always remains, even after thorough analysis, which both points to the limits of our research and its next steps. The book<\/span>provides practical tools, tips, and lessons learned for people working in urban archaeology. Setbacks are openly discussed, providing a road map for dealing with conflict. Though the book<\/span> narrowly focuses on Detroit, it has broad application, largely thanks to its diverse sites and communities. Self-branded as archaeology, Detroit Remains <\/i>nevertheless illustrates how contemporary preservation can effectively work with the recent past.<\/div>

The University of Mary Washington Center for Historic Preservation has awarded this prize<\/span><\/a> annually since 1989 to the book<\/span> (or book<\/span>s) with the most potential for positively impacting the discipline of historic preservation in the United States. In making its selection, the jury focuses on book<\/span>s that break new ground or contribute to the intellectual vitality of the preservation movement. Winners receive a monetary prize<\/span> and are invited to give a lecture at UMW. The jury was comprised of preservation academics, professionals, alumni, and a current student.<\/div>

Both volumes challenge and expand the way we determine significance of a place or object.<\/p><p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upress.umn.edu\/book-division\/books\/how-the-working-class-home-became-modern-1900-1940#:~:text=In%20How%20the%20Working%2DClass,their%20housing%20and%20domestic%20conditions.&text=America's%20Common%20Houses.-,This%20book%20is%20the%20most%20important%20study%20of%20common%20American,in%20the%20past%20half%20century.\"><em>How the Working-Class Home Became Modern<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>Hubka works to correct our focus on high-style and upper-class housing by demonstrating the importance of change over time in small and often over-looked buildings. His sweeping work provides a way to study vernacular architecture of the working class as a topic worthy of its own focus. In so doing, Hubka makes a compelling argument that historic preservation has historically ignored the significance of working-class houses and the manner in which their owners were able to expand their properties and acquire services such as water, electricity, gas, sewer, kitchen appliances, and the indoor three-fixture bathroom suite. Through a wealth of illustrations, period photographs and drawings, and detailed timelines of the introduction of new technologies, Hubka has produced an enduring resource that will allow architectural historians to better assess and contextualize the fragmented and gradual modernization of vernacular buildings.<\/p><p>Williams’ <a href=\"https:\/\/vernonpress.com\/book\/1029\"><em>Stories in Stone<\/em><\/a> is a powerful demonstration of how a multidisciplinary micro-historical and object-biography approach can uncover an expansive story that reveals not only the rich history of the objects themselves, but can also combat areas in which the historical narrative has long been too narrow or circumscribed. Williams examines two gravestones from Williamsburg’s 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century African American community that could have been relegated to a footnote in the historical record. Instead, through an exploration of the life cycle of the gravestones, Williams uses the excavation, curation, public engagement, and interpretation of the objects to deepen our understanding of free African American agency, to create a historiography of the preservation discipline, and to assess how we create and maintain memory. One book is more technical and methodological, providing a guide to understanding the tangible and the history and use of those objects, and the other weaves an expansion of the historical record through a painstaking examination of two objects. Both Hubka and Williams add richness to the histories of groups long underrepresented in elitist histories and traditional preservation practice, creating resources that preservationists can employ to broaden our understanding of the past and our discipline.<\/p><p>The University of Mary Washington Center for Historic Preservation has awarded this prize annually since 1989 to the book (or books) with the most potential for positively impacting the discipline of historic preservation in the United States. In making its selection, the jury focuses on books that break new ground or contribute to the intellectual vitality of the preservation movement. Winners receive a monetary prize and are invited to give a lecture at UMW. This year is the first time since 1990 in which two books have received the prize, which according to this year’s jury, is reflective of the diversity of modern preservation practice. Her work allows her to apply what she has learned in Museum Studies courses at the University of Mary Washington to a unique museum environment, one that focuses on telling the stories of homesteaders on the “last frontier” of Alaska. Abigail’s main project is cataloging the museum’s collections onto Past Perfect software. She is describing, measuring, labeling, and photographing hundreds of objects, and making sure both paper and digital records match. She also displays these objects throughout the museum’s cabins and exhibitions.
