Mara Scanlon’s intellectual interests often are prompted by questions like this: What is the role of literature in this difficult world? How does literature embody, express, or challenge our ways of being, and how do we ethically respond to the selves and others we find there?  Her focal period begins with Whitman and Dickinson, focusing most heavily on Modernist writing, with some reach into contemporary poetry and poetics as well.  Other specific interests include the digital humanities, periodical studies, and women’s or gender studies.  Dr. Scanlon’s most frequently taught courses include Modern Poetry, Contemporary Poetry, Literature of the Great War, Asian American Literature, and Women and Modernism.
