This course explores how computers are being used to tell stories. We&#8217;ll study text-based technologies-blogging, the web- and how those models have changed the way we publish and disseminate narratives. Well also study the roles of audio, video, and images in narrative: computer animation, the ethics of altering digital images, and the Story Corps project. Well also study the roles of audio, video, and images in narrative: computer animation, the ethics of altering digital images, and the Story Corps project. Students also design and produce an on-line journal.<\/p><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h4>ENGL 359: Transmedia Fiction<\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<h5>Zach Whalen; 11:00 &#8211; 11:50 MWF; Combs 349<\/h5>\n<p>A survey of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transmedia_storytelling\" target=\"_blank\">transmedia fiction<\/a>:\u201d narratives conveyed simultaneously through distinct <strong>b<\/strong>ut complementary media, <strong>i<\/strong>ncluding film, videogames, comics, or music. Studen<strong>t<\/strong>s examine major and emerging texts in this genre and engage with creative practice by producing their own transmedia work<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This course responds to the re<strong>l<\/strong>ativel<strong>y<\/strong> recent emergence of stories that are told through\u00a0<multiple simultaneous media channels. so-called fic>tion\u201d encompasses several specific genres &#8212; Alternate Reality Games (ARGs), Viral Marketing, Hoaxes, Transmedia Storytelling, etc. &#8212; which s<strong>h<\/strong>are a common emphasis on digital technology as a metaplatform for disseminating la<strong>r<\/strong>ge-scale interactive narrative works of significant compl<strong>e<\/strong>xity. High-profile <strong>e<\/strong>xamples of this include ARGs used to promote new movies or TV series\u2019 (Lost, <strong>f<\/strong>or example), but increasingly, med<strong>i<\/strong>a consumers take <strong>f<\/strong>or granted that the s<strong>t<\/strong>or<strong>y<\/strong> worlds in one medium ca<strong>n<\/strong> escape traditional technolog<strong>i<\/strong>cal boundaries and expand into other worlds &#8212; perhaps our own. This class first approaches this phenomeno<strong>n<\/strong> from a historical angle by placing these works in an appropriate literary context. Next, the course theorizes th<strong>e<\/strong>se undertakings by incorporating relevant narratological theory. Coursework may include digital approaches to creavity, historiography, media analysis and thinking critically about and through digital culture. This is the only specifically-required course in the Minor, and it is being offered for the first time in Fall 2013, when it is scheduled for 10:00 &#8211; 10:50, MWF.<\/p>\n<p>DGST 101 will meet in a computer lab (Combs 349), and students will be working with software to produce digitally-specific scholarly and creative works.\u00a0<strong id=\"internal-source-marker_0.7753326785750687\">While some coursework will involve working closely with computer software, no prior experience with programming is required or expected.<\/strong> You should simply be willing to learn.<\/p>\n<h3>Objectives<\/h3>\n<p>Because this course is the introduction to the Digital Studies minor, students will be introduced systematically to each of four aspects of digital studies as outlined in the bulleted list below. Each of these will be developed further in the minor\u2019s approved electives, should you decide to continue with it, so DGST 101 is intended to create a solid foundation upon which those discoveries can proceed.<\/p>\n<p>By completing this course, successful students will begin to \u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Develop skills in designing, building and sharing ideas that can be expressed through the uniquely multimodal, procedural, and networked capabilities of digital tools.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Explore processes of knowledge production by using digital technology in researching, analyzing, and executing critical inquiry.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Build knowledge in contemporary and historical digital cultures, including social, ethical and philosophical issues related to technological development.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Build, promote and sustain an active and engaged digital identity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Requirements<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">All required readings for this course are available online, through our Library\u2019s subscriptions, through Canvas, or via the open web. Readings, viewings and playings will be drawn from the history of the development of digital media as well as contemporary issues related to digital culture. See the course outline below for more specifics.<\/p>\n<p>Strictly speaking, the only requirement is that you own a domain name and hosting account through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umwdomains.com\">UMWDomains<\/a>. (If you already have one, then by all means use it for this class &#8212; that\u2019s what it\u2019s for!) If you don\u2019t already have one, I will guide you through that process in the first week of class. These are free to you.
