This list is meant only to be indicative and not comprehensive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>For initiatives involving teaching and course development, faculty should instead consult the <a href=\"http:\/\/convergence.umw.edu\/teaching-center\/\">University Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation <\/a>programs and, when available, the Dean of Arts and Sciences Pedagogy Grants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Projects funded once by the Committee are not eligible for a subsequent grant for what is substantially the same project.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>The Committee acknowledges that some projects are larger and have longer germination periods than others. In such cases, the Committee may fund subsequent FRG applications to support, for example, writing different chapters of a book manuscript or completing different stages in a long-term project. In such cases, the applicant must make clear in the proposal what the relationship of the part to the whole is.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Only candidates who have submitted all\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/dean\/final-report-faculty-research-grant\/\">final reports <\/a>from grants with completed funding periods will be considered for evaluation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Projects for work leading to a terminal degree, including a dissertation, will not be funded.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr>\n<h2>Restrictions<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Grants are awarded for one fiscal year, July 1 through June 30.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Money awarded for expenses must be spent within that year (that is, must be drawn on by June 1) and the activities, including travel, must be carried out according to the timeline offered in the original proposal unless that timetable is adjusted in consultation with the dean of CAS.<\/li>\n<li>Expenses that occur prior to the funding period may be reimbursed during the funding period upon consultation with the Dean.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Grant funds for expenses may only be used in accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia (\u2018the Commonwealth\u2019) and University spending policies.<\/li>\n<li>All purchases of non-consumable items made with UMW grant funds (e.g., equipment, software, books, DVDs, etc.) are the property of UMW because they have been purchased with Commonwealth funds. These items are not to be retained by the applicant but are, instead, to be turned over to UMW when the grant project is completed.<\/li>\n<li>Grants used to secure a course release will cover the costs of hiring an adjunct instructor for the semester in which the grant recipient will take the release. Faculty are encouraged to work with their chairs to determine if locating or hiring replacement faculty will put an unfair burden on the department.<\/li>\n<li>A proposal for a faculty summer stipend makes a request for the standard amount of $4,000 in lieu of teaching one summer session course. Faculty members are limited to a maximum of four remunerated summer session responsibilities, two during each summer session.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants should note that stipends are taxable and are subject to Social Security (FICA) deductions, whereas project expenses are not.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty may request a ratio of stipend to expense up to the maximum amount of the award, $4500. For example, rather $4000 in stipend and $500 in expenses, one might request $3000 in stipend and $1500 in expenses.<\/li>\n<li>In the interest of funding the greatest number of worthy projects, the Committee reserves the right to fund projects partially (e.g., an applicant may ask for $4000 in stipend and $500 in expenses but may receive $4000 overall, which the applicant could then appeal to the dean to see if they could receive $3500 in stipend and $500 in expenses).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eligibility FRGs are made only to full-time, continuing members of the instructional faculty of all ranks, including lecturers, affiliated with the CAS. Students who are interested in developing a Special Major must adhere to the following guidelines:<\/p>\n<p>All material must be submitted to the Curriculum Committee for approval prior to completing 15 credits in the proposed Special Major.\u00a0 The Committee usually meets once per month during the academic year.\u00a0 Check with the Office of Academic Services (Lee Hall, room 206, extension 1010) for additional information regarding the application process.<\/p>\n<h2>General Requirements for a Special Major:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Students must work with a faculty advisor who is a member of the continuing faculty and who has expertise in the field of study the student wishes to pursue. The role of the faculty advisor in the special major is as instrumental as that of an advisor in an ordinary major, and both the faculty advisor and the student should bear this in mind when committing to the proposed special major.<\/li>\n<li>The advisor and student should meet and thoroughly discuss all aspects of the proposal, verifying the completeness of the proposal as well as the feasibility of its timely completion.\u00a0\u00a0 The advisor and student should work together carefully to consider, among other things, the frequency of course offerings, appropriateness of chosen courses, prerequisite requirements, and the design of the required capstone course. The faculty advisor must sign the cover sheet of the special major outline. Special major applications submitted without a faculty adviser’s signature will not be considered by the Curriculum Committee.<\/li>\n<li>Students must have completed 28 credits in order to request a Special Major. Students must apply as sophomores or juniors (i.e. before completing 90 credits).<\/li>\n<li>The number of credits in the Special Major must be at least 30 credits but may be no more than 48. All of these must be graded credits. No more than five courses in the proposed special major may have been completed at the time of the application.<\/li>\n<li>The proposed Special Major must have a clear title that is (a) no more than 24 characters long and (b) uses only reasonable abbreviations. (This is a restriction based on the limits of the size of the data field for \u201cmajor\u201d in the computer system).<\/li>\n<li>Students must conduct an exhaustive survey of UMW\u2019s course offerings to determine whether UMW can viably support the proposed Special Major program and to ensure that the strongest possible complement of courses has been included in the proposal.<\/li>\n<li>Complete information about the courses to be included in the Special Major must be provided on the Special Major Course Outline. Specifically, the course number, course title, the number of credits, and any required electives for each course must be listed in the appropriate spaces on the Special Major Course Outline.<\/li>\n<li>Students must include courses in the Special Major from at least two disciplines (i.e. 25% of courses must be from a second and\/or third discipline).<\/li>\n<li>Within the major, at least two-thirds of courses must be upper division (300-400 level).<\/li>\n<li>The major should be designed with a core of required courses and elective courses. Students should list several options for the elective courses. The design of the major with required courses and elective courses, as other majors at Mary Washington, would provide flexibility in scheduling. Students are required to contact department chairs to ensure that the proposed courses will be offered before the expected graduation date. The student must obtain the signature of the chair of each relevant department on the Course Outline.<\/li>\n<li>The Special Major must include a seminar or a suitable capstone course alternative. On the \u201cSpecial Major Course Outline\u201d sheet, the student should the symbol (#) next to the course number that serves as the seminar or capstone course.<\/li>\n<li>In the case of double majors, the maximum degree of overlap between the majors is nine credits.<\/li>\n<li>One-half of the Special Major program required credits must be earned at the University of Mary Washington.<\/li>\n<li>All courses that are prerequisites for the courses that are included in the Special Major must be listed in the appropriate space on the Special Major Course Outline.<\/li>\n<li>At least a 2.00 grade-point average in the major is required for graduation.<\/li>\n<li>No more than 60 credits in any one discipline will counted toward the credits required for a baccalaureate degree.<\/li>\n<li>Once the Special Major has been approved, the Office of the Registrar will complete the Major Declaration Card for the student.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Application and Approval Process for a Special Major:<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Students must email the required application materials to the Chair of the Curriculum Committee. All application materials must be in a single attachment to the email. The attachment must be in Word format. Required materials are: the Special Major Application and the written rationale for the Special Major. The attachment should be named Special_Major_Student\u2019s last name.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, students must submit one printed copy of the Application, signed by the student, the advisor, and the chair of each relevant department. The signatures are to assure the committee that the student has discussed the future availability of courses with the department chairs.<\/li>\n<li>All materials must be received by the chair of the committee by 5:00 p.m. one week prior to the next meeting of the committee; this includes the original copy with appropriate signatures and an electronic copy (that does not need signatures).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/dean\/files\/2013\/09\/special-major-application-coversheet-checklist9.15.docx\">Special Major Application<\/a>\u00a0must be included (download documents from the Curriculum Committee website).<\/li>\n<li>The written rationale for the Special Major must state:\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0The learning goals and objectives of the Special Major.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Why the applicant is interested in this Special Major.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Why the program outlined as a Special Major is an appropriate course of study in a liberal arts college environment.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Why a Special Major will allow the applicant to accomplish learning goals and objectives that an existing major will not allow them to accomplish.<\/li>\n<li>Why the specific courses chosen will help the student meet the goals laid out for the Special Major. Applicants should also provide an explanation for the chosen required courses and the elective courses. The student can strengthen the case for a Special Major by demonstrating that other colleges or universities offer major programs in the proposed discipline and that UMW can provide a comparable experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Submitting a revised Special Major proposal<\/h2>\n<p>If the Special Major proposal is not immediately approved by the Curriculum Committee, the Committee may request that the applicant submit a revised proposal incorporating specific recommendations for improvement. A rejected proposal for a special major must be resubmitted to the committee no more than two meetings after the latest rejection. A resubmission sent to the committee later than this will be considered a new proposal and thus subject to the same credit constraints as any new proposal: no more than 90 total credits and no more than five courses in the proposed special major.<\/p>\n<p>If an applicant receives the request noted above, the following documents must be included with the revised proposal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The original proposal<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0All previous correspondence from the Curriculum Committee chair containing the Committee\u2019s decision and recommendations for revision<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A statement summarizing how the proposal was revised based upon the Committee\u2019s recommendations<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0If applicable, a rationale statement explaining why revisions were not carried out as suggested by the Committee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Failure to submit the requested revision by the deadline for the Committee\u2019s next meeting will result in the original proposal being deemed as rejected. \u00a0Should the student still desire the proposal to be considered, it will be treated as a new initial proposal by the committee once it is finally received. \u00a0The purpose of this rule is to encourage students to submit revisions promptly.<\/p>\n<h2>Changes to the Special Major<\/h2>\n<p>After the committee has approved a Special Major, students wishing to substitute one course for another must receive prior approval of this action. Proposed changes must be made in writing and submitted with the faculty advisor\u2019s signature. In order to request a change in the Special Major, the student must submit a proposal for the changes that include the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A brief explanation and clear justification for the requested changes.<\/li>\n<li>A copy of the original Special Major Application.<\/li>\n<li>A copy of a new Special Major Application \u2013 this is where the faculty advisor will sign in support of the proposed change. The number of awards in the college alternates between five in one year and one the year following. Professors Jen Chiang, Steve Harris, Elizabeth Larus, Marie McAllister, and Bob Rycroft will cycle out of their Waple professorships in May.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Purpose<\/span>:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>To pursue a project<\/strong> during the two-year tenure of the professorship. Projects may include research, writing, performances, creative work, and the scholarship of pedagogy.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Application due Date:<\/span> <strong>Monday, December 4, 2017<br>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Application must include:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Description of the project (maximum 1500 words)<\/li>\n<li>Abstract of the project description (200 words)<\/li>\n<li>Clear timeline for the project that will be carried out<\/li>\n<li>Current <em>c.v.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Budget, to include: <strong><em>Note: <\/em><\/strong><em>all of the following will be subtracted from the $15,000\/year stipend carried by the Professorship<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">number and timing of course releases (maximum 2\/year),<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">cost of equipment or supplies,<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">cost of travel related to the project<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Signature of Department Chair<\/li>\n<li>Must be submitted in electronic format (<strong>all one document<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Selection Criteria<\/span>:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Quality of the proposed project<\/li>\n<li>Appropriateness of timeline to the project<\/li>\n<li>Record of success in publication or creative endeavors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Selection Process<\/span>:<\/h3>\n<p>The Dean and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will review all applications and make recommendations to the Provost\u2019s Office for final adjudication. The Provost\u2019s Office will also receive recommendations from the Committee on Sabbaticals, Fellowships, and Faculty Awards of the University Faculty Council.<\/p>\n<p>The Waple Professorship carries a stipend of $13,000 to $15,000 per year (actual award amount to be determined when the UMW Foundation Board sets the budget spending policy for all endowed accounts) which can be used, per the candidate\u2019s discretion and as designated in the budget proposal, as a salary stipend, as research support, or as course release time (a maximum of six credit hours annually). When subtracting an amount for course releases, the University assigns a cost equal to the actual salary paid to the adjunct replacement. (The average adjunct cost is about $3,775 per course). The successful applicant may use the research support fund for any combination of the following:\u00a0 travel, software and\/or databases, equipment, and other professional expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty who are on or expect to be on a sabbatical or Jepson Fellowship or some other form of educational\/research leave are eligible to apply.<\/p>\n<p>University policy stipulates that faculty cannot earn more than 33% of their contracted salary from other sources during the academic year (from grants, summer teaching, UMW research stipends, etc.). \u00a0Faculty should consider this information when deciding on the amounts they wish to budget for supplies, course buyouts, travel, and the salary supplement.<\/p>\n<p>An announcement will be made no later than early February of the people selected for the Waple Professorships.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Calendar of Actions for 2017-18 is:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>December 4<\/strong> \u2013 Waple applications due to the Dean\u2019s office (applications need to be in electronic format, submitted to Martha Link (<a href=\"mailto:mlink@umw.edu\">mlink@umw.edu<\/a>))<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 6<\/strong> \u2013 Dean gives copies of applications the SFFA Committee<\/p>\n<p><strong>By January 24<\/strong> \u2013 Deans and SFFA give separate recommendations to Provost<\/p>\n<p><strong>February 1<\/strong> \u2013 Provost announces Waple Awards<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Current Waple Professors (2 year terms)<br>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Awarded 2016<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Yuan\u2011Jen Chiang, Professor of Mathematics<\/p>\n<p>Steven E.
