Internships Appropriate for Undergraduate Students of Classical Studies

Exciting internship opportunities are available for students of Classical Studies in a wide array of career fields, from museums, archives, cultural institutions, and policy think tanks to non-profit, government, publishing, and more.

Below you’ll find a list of exciting internship opportunities with links to descriptions of them and applications to them.  Deadlines and requirements for each of them vary.  Some are remote or hybrid, while others are on-site.

UMW Internships Portal–Career and Professional Development Center

Internships with the Center for Hellenic Studies (potential for telework, paid): The Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington D.C. helps educators, researchers, and the general public rediscover the Humanism of the ancient Greeks.

Internship with the George Washington Foundation: The George Washington Foundation’s Education and Visitor Data Spring 2026 Internship at Ferry Farm.  This is an unpaid, but local internship.

Internships with the National Museum of Women Artists: Paid, part-time internships in Washington D.C.

Internships with the Folger Shakespeare Library: a variety of internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C.

Internships with The Washington D.C. Office of Planning:  the Washington Office of Planning has a number of internships, including an “Archaeology Program Internship”.  Search for “internships” in the search field of the website.

Internships with the National Park Service: Multiple focus areas including archaeology, history, communications, digital experience, and historic preservation, among others.

Internships at the U.S. Library of Congress: Ten-or-Twelve week paid internships (both onsite at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. and remote).

Internships with the Smithsonian Institute: A wide variety of internships for students in a variety of Humanities and Social Sciences majors at various individual museums of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.   

Internships with the National Archives: A wide variety of internships for students in a variety of Humanities, Social Science, and other majors at the National Archives in College Park, MD and Washington D.C.

Internships with the VMFA: A variety of paid and unpaid internships at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art in Richmond, VA.  Note that the VMFA has a very fine collection of ancient Greek pottery. 

Penguin Random House: Penguin Random House offers paid, remote internship opportunities for students who wish to learn about the world of book publishing.

Internships with Voice Up: 10-12 week, flexible hours, remote, unpaid (volunteer) internships in Children’s Game Design and/or Children’s Creative Storytelling.

Internships with the United Nations Foundation: The United Nations Foundation offers internships for the spring, summer, and fall semesters.  Check in November for Spring internships; April for summer internships; and August for fall internships.

Internships with the Bipartisan Policy Center: Paid internships year-round, giving interns hands-on experience in policy research, events, and the policymaking process in Washington D.C.

Internships with the Center for Strategic and International Studies: full and part-time internships in the fall, spring, and semester for undergraduates, recent graduates, and graduate students in Washington D.C..  All interns participate in the Abshire-Inamori Leadership Academy supplementing the work of CSIS interns with practical discussions on current global affairs and training in key policy skills.

Internships with the U.S. Office of Foreign Affairs et al.: Multiple internship opportunities for students with the U.S. Dept. of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the United States Agency for Global Media, and other foreign affairs offices of the U.S. government.

Internships with the Chrysler Museum of Art: Interns receive a stipend.  Internship is on-site at the museum in Norfolk, VA

Internship at the Walters Art Museum:: 10-week, paid summer internships to undergraduate, graduate, and recently graduated students in a variety of departments in the museum. Students must be residents of Baltimore, MD. 

Internship opportunities with the Commonwealth of Virginia: A wide range of internship programs that connect students and academics with on-the-job training in a variety of fields.

Internships with The Metropolitan Museum of Art [The Met, NYC]: full and part-time, 10-week internships for current undergraduate or graduate students.  Fall, spring, and summer internships available.  In New York City.

Internships with the Bass Museum of Art [Miami, FL]: internship program aimed at college juniors, seniors, and recent graduates; encourages applicants from a wide range of disciplines.  All internships are unpaid.  In Miami, FL.
