Josiah Osgood Lecture, Eta Sigma Phi Induction, & The Winner of the Laura V. Sumner Award

March 21, 2015 by Joseph Romero

Slide01On Wednesday, March 18th, Josiah Osgood, Professor of Classics at Georgetown University, delivered a lecture on the constriction and transformation of laughter in the Roman Republic from the hallmark of a free state to a mordant resistance to totalitarianism.  The lecture was very informative, well-attended–and funny.  The lecture was sponsored by the Beta Nu chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the departments of Classics, Philosophy, & Religion and History & American Studies, and by the dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

In keeping with tradition, the faculty in Classics also used the occasion to announce the new inductees into Eta Sigma Phi as well as the winner of the 2015-2016 Laura V. Sumner Award, a scholarship given to the best rising senior majoring in Classics.   This year’s recipient is Ms. Clare Anderson of Spotsylvania, Virginia.  Congratulations, Clare!
