Under the watchful eye of faculty and students, the original amphitheater only consisted of a wooden structure as well as wooden benches. It wasn’t until the 1920s when the construction of a steel and concrete theatre, which was overseen by Fredericksburg City Manager Mr. L.J. Houston, was erected. In the years following, graduation commencement ceremonies and theatre productions took place at the amphitheater. The amphitheater was the fourth structure constructed at the college and was primarily used for entertainment purposes. The many additions were overseen by three university presidents, including; Edward H. Russell, Algernon B. Chandler Jr., and Morgan L. In 1934, work for the expansion began which mainly consisted of enlarging the stage on both sides as well as expanding the audience seating. At the end of these renovations, the total capacity of the amphitheater had increased to 1,600. By the 1950s, Greek Doric columns along with the pergola were built, which were the last objects to be added to the site. In 1955 the last commencement ceremony took place in the amphitheater. Due to unforeseen weather in 1956, the graduation ceremony was moved inside to Dodd Auditorium, which is where ceremonies for the following 10 years took place.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">There is a high degree of material and design integrity from the 1953 expansion which is why this site is so historically significant. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the pergolas and concrete seating was removed. Most recently in 2011, the fallen cast stone columns were removed to prevent further injury and property damage. Lastly, in 2012, a summer storm caused two trees to collapse onto the stage of the amphitheater triggering the urge to restore it. In 2014, the university started a campaign to raise $3 million to restore, repair, and reconstruct the amphitheater. The goals of this restoration include; return the amphitheater to its historical glory, increase accessibility, upgrade infrastructure, enhance flexibility, add restroom facilities and sustain the park-like setting. Currently three positions are available.<\/p><ol>\n<li>Department of Historic Preservation Aide:<\/li>\n<\/ol><p>This student aide position will assist Mrs. Coates in the day to day operation of the department. Duties will include but are not limited to maintaining the equipment library, creating and maintaining displays and bulletin boards, updates to the department job bank and website, creation of the department newsletter, and providing general assistance to faculty members as needed.<\/p><ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Center for Historic Preservation Aide:<\/li>\n<\/ol><p>This student aide will work directly with the Center for Historic Preservation Director, Associate Professor Spencer, to facilitate the Center’s mission. Duties will include but are not limited to promotion of the department and center on social media sites, updates to the centers web page, promotion and organization of lectures and other sponsored events, and assistance with research and publications undertaken by the center<\/p><ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Academic Aide:<\/li>\n<\/ol><p>This student aide will assist with various historic preservation class projects (TBD). Duties <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">may include<\/span> but are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not limited<\/span> to conducting archival research locally in Fredericksburg, conducting field work associated with historic buildings in the region, contacting project stakeholders, and performing general management duties.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Each aide will be expected to work a full <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">10 hours per week and will be paid $7.25 per hour<\/span><\/strong>. However, that doesn’t always cut it in the field of historic preservation. Documentation is a key component in the field  and one that is well suited to take advantage of technological changes and while we have been progressive in some respects we are now adding some additional digital documentation tool sets to our toolbox. you see members of the Architect of the Capitol in front, from the general contractor Grunley, masons from Lorton Stone, and conservators and technicians from Conservation Solutions, Inc. There are three Mary Washington alumni– Justine Bello, ’05, Caitlin Smith, ’07 and Jen Mason, ’07.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Three University of Mary Washington’s, Department of Historic Preservation alumni, Jen Mason, Justine Bello, and Caitlin Smith spent the better part of the last three years helping with the incredible task of conserving the US Capitol building.  Employed by Conservation Solutions Inc., the three Mary Washington alums meticulously worked to clean the delicate stonework using lasers and applying chemical consolidates when necessary.<\/p><p>During the initial phase this past summer, the alumni had the opportunity for some hands-on experience while preserving the exterior stone on the east and north elevations of the Senate wing of the building. The company’s role allowed them to work in both the initial preparation and final detailing phases to restore. They worked within time and environment\/weather constraints to utilize specialized methodology.<\/p><p>The group focused on twenty-two columns on the east elevation and ten columns on the north elevation. There were six levels of scaffolding wrapped around the building being  held in place by tension braces on columns The chemical consolidates they used had temperature and humidity requirements for application and curing, so there were days when industrial heaters and air conditioners had to be used to surround the work within the scaffold. Necessary protective gear and summer temperatures of up to 107 degrees indeed made for a challenging restoration project, but at the end of the day, being a part of such a monumental preservation effort was worth every drop of sweat.<\/p><p>The UMW alumni were allowed to be a part of a nationally recognized structure’s restoration and the importance of their work will be recognized on a national scale for years to come. One of these alumni took away a beautiful moment from the long and tedious work given to her: “The upside was that I got to eat lunch sitting next to gorgeous historic leafy capitals and had a great view of DC from deck 6”, said Jen, in regards to the tedious task of which they had been given.<\/p><p>This opportunity gave them real life experience as well as a foundation for further graduate degrees preparation to help them pursue careers in the conservation and management of historic resources both in the built and natural environment.<\/p><p>This summer’s endeavor was just the beginning, as this work prepared the alumni for the next planned phase, which is slated to begin in February. 1024px\"><\/a><\/p><p>During the fall my HISP 461 Building Forensics class descends on a local historic building in hopes of providing the owner or organization with additional information. While we dig through local archives its often the observations concerning the physical fabric of the building which offer the most additional insight about the buildings development over time. This fall the class is investigating the Masons Lodge at the corner of Princess Anne Street and Hanover Street in Fredericksburg. Fortunately for us, the original building specifications survive in the Lodge’s records and date the building to c. 1816. The specifications also allow us to compare the current physical fabric with what is noted in 1816 helping to discern what is original (period 1) and what has been added or changed over time. For instance the original specifications note “…the large room to be finished in a plain stile [style] with chair board of only plain plank 4 inches wide with a bead on each side…” With a little snooping we were able to locate a portion of the original chair rail still intact (fig 1.).<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_5178\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5178\" style=\"width: 681px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chp\/files\/2016\/10\/DSC_0024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5178\" src=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chp\/files\/2016\/10\/DSC_0024-681x1024.jpg\" alt='Fig. 1 showing the chair rail with two \"beads\".
