The series consisted of four speakers who presented on how they are working to interpret vanished cultural landscapes and buildings.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&ldquo;The Menokin Glass Project&rdquo;, Calder Loth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&ldquo;<\/em>Landscape, Preservation, and Reconstruction&hellip;Why can&rsquo;t We be Friends?&rdquo;, David Muraca<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&ldquo;<\/em>Reconstructing the Spatial Footprint of Richmond: Connecting the Past and Present&rdquo;, Justin Madron<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&ldquo;Returning Slavery to the Plantation Landscape: The South Yard at James Madison&rsquo;s Montpelier&rdquo;, Jennifer Glass<\/li>\n<\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2016-preservation-lecture-series\">2016 Preservation Lecture Series<\/h3><p>In its second year, the student choice lecture, sponsored by the Center, provides students with the opportunity to invite someone that they feel is making a positive impact in the field of Historic Preservation. This year their choice was Joseph McGill, founder of the Slave Dwelling Project.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a Preservation Book Prize (2017)<\/a><\/h3><p>Established by the Center in 1988, the Historic Preservation Book Prize is awarded annually by a jury of preservation academics and professionals to the book with the most potential for positively impacting the discipline of historic preservation in the United States.&nbsp; The book prize was awarded this year (2017)&nbsp;to Catherine Fleming Bruce for her book, <em>The Sustainers: Being, Building and Doing Good through Activism in the Sacred Spaces of Civil Rights, Human Rights and Social Movements.<\/em><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chp\/files\/2017\/08\/img001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1021\" height=\"1024\" Preservation Book Prize.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-historic-structures-inventory-and-integrity-assessment-of-the-blue-ridge-parkway-2014-2015-17\">Historic Structures Inventory and Integrity Assessment of the Blue Ridge Parkway (2014-2015-17)<\/h3><p>The UMW Center for Historic Preservation received&nbsp;$13,670 in funding from the National Park Service to assist in&nbsp; the processing of data collected as part of a National Historic Landmark nomination for the Blue Ridge Parkway.&nbsp; During the process two UMW students, Linda Komp and Heather Kennedy, entered survey information from the Virginia portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway into the Virginia Department of Historic Resources VCRIS system.&nbsp; The project&nbsp;was led by Assistant Professor Michael Spencer.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pope-leighey-house-wood-conservation-workshop-2015\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/2015\/04\/30\/hands-on-history\/\">Pope-Leighey House Wood Conservation Workshop (2015)<\/a><\/h3><p>Students participated in the conservation of the wood siding of Frank Lloyd Wright&rsquo;s Pope-Leighey House in the spring of 2015 by sensitively removing years of dirt and grime.&nbsp; The workshop was facilitated by the National Trust for Historic held at UMW in June 2013<\/h3><p>The Second Undergraduate Historic Preservation Education Symposium (UHPES2) was held on the UMW campus in Fredericksburg, VA on June 20-22, 2013.<\/p><p>The success of the first UHPES indicated that historic preservation faculty were interested in more dialogue regarding pedagogy, curriculum, and placement. As a result, the Center for Historic Preservation hosted a second UHPES. This iteration, faculty were invited from all levels of preservation education, including masters&rsquo; level. Although the focus remained on undergraduate education, more was addressed regarding other levels of education.<\/p><p>Results and lessons learned from UHPES2 will be made available on this website and disseminated. Keep an eye out for it!<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-uhpes-held-at-umw-in-june-2010\">UHPES held at UMW in June 2010<\/h3><p>The Center for Historic Preservation hosted the First Undergraduate Historic Preservation Education Symposium on June 10-12, 2010 at the University of Mary Washington. The symposium brought together faculty from undergraduate preservation institutions from across the United States. Topics of discussion were focused on curriculum, pedagogy, and student placement.<\/p><p>There are many programs teaching historic preservation in America, the vast majority of them at the graduate level. However, although there are only eight undergraduate programs, they graduate many more students. Therefore, understanding the specific issues in teaching historic preservation to undergraduates is of particular interest. Who are these students? How and what are they taught? What are the emerging issues in teaching this population?<\/p><p>This was the topic of the symposium, which was the first meeting of its kind. It served to create a community and start a conversation so that preservation educators can learn from each other to better teach our students. Established by the Center in 1988, the Historic Preservation Book Prize is awarded annually by a jury of preservation academics and professionals to the book with the most potential for positively impacting the discipline of historic preservation in the United States. In making its selection, the jury focuses on books that break new ground or contribute to the intellectual vitality of the preservation movement. Entries may come from any discipline that relates to the theory or practice of historic preservation. Nominations may be made by any source.<\/p><p>In order for a book to be eligible for the 2018 Historic Preservation Book Prize, it must be available in the United States between <strong>January 1, and December 31, 2017. <\/strong> Letters of nomination and <strong>seven (7) <\/strong>copies of the nominated book must be postmarked by <strong>January 5, 2018,<\/strong> and sent to:<\/p><p>Michael Spencer<br>Center for Historic Preservation<br>University of Mary Washington<br>1301 College Avenue, Combs 135<br>Fredericksburg, VA 22401-5300<\/p><p>Announcement of the book selected for the 2018 Historic Preservation Book Prize will be made during Preservation Week in May 2018. The Center has two main missions that govern its activities:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Center supports the undergraduate academic major in Historic Preservation by sponsoring lectures, workshops, symposia and conferences; by organizing fieldwork and international study opportunities for students and faculty; and by sustaining activities that expand opportunities for students to participate in preservation-related research. To this end, the Center participates actively in local, regional and international preservation organizations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Center supports Historic Preservation activities by offering public programs, by undertaking cooperative research, by providing professional services and technical assistance to organizations, property owners, and local governments and agencies.<\/li>\n<\/ol><p>The Center facilitates the Department of Historic Preservation&rsquo;s newsletter. He is responsible for contract negotiation, budgeting, research design, and oversight of staff and facilities. In addition to these responsibilities Prof. Turdean also serves on the Museum Studies Minor Committee at the University. She was recently awarded a grant from the Council of Virginia Archaeologists to support student research on the African American history at Sherwood Forest Plantation. She has also conducted research and published on the archaeology and history of the 17th-century Potomac River Valley and on the archaeology of clay tobacco pipes. Dr. McMillan was recently awarded a grant from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to analyze the Nomini Plantation archaeological collections- a 17<sup>th<\/sup>-century site that was excavated in the 1970s but was never processed.
