I am leaving Mary Washington with a much deeper knowledge and appreciation of chemistry which I owe all to UMW\u2019s chemistry faculty and department.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Ashley Parkhurst, Biochemistry, Class of 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-study-chemistry-and-biochemistry\">Why study Chemistry and Biochemistry?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UMW Chemistry Overview Video\" width=\"456\" height=\"342\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HnYiGFoEZnA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Chemistry of the University of Mary Washington is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acs.org\/content\/acs\/en\/about\/governance\/committees\/training\/acsapproved.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Chemical Society (ACS) approved program<\/a> offering majors in <a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/chemistry-major\/\">Chemistry<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/biochemistry-major-requirements\/\">Biochemistry<\/a>.  Our program is based upon a modern curriculum and is supported by well-equipped laboratories that supplement and extend classroom instruction. Required courses span the traditional areas of organic, analytical, and physical chemistry, and include senior capstone experiences that help students hone their laboratory problem solving skills and their oral and written scientific communication. Electives also give in-depth treatment to other topics, and there are ample <a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/research-opportunities\/\">research opportunities<\/a> for students to apply course work to current research problems in various areas of chemistry. Students leave the program well-prepared for <a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/careers-in-chemistry\/\">jobs or graduate study<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chemistry department also sponsors a <a href=\"https:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/acs-student-chapter\/\">student members chapter <\/a>of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acs.org\/content\/acs\/en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Chemical Society<\/a>.  This student organization sponsors a variety of activities including a magic show during Family Weekend, outside speakers, and extracurricular events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-umw-chemistry-majors\">UMW Chemistry Majors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The department offers majors leading to a B.S. in Chemistry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/biochemistry-major-requirements\/\">Biochemistry<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/chemistry-major\/\">Chemistry<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Students can also complete additional information to earn an <strong>ACS certified major<\/strong> in <a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/biochemistry-major-requirements\/\">Biochemistry<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/chemistry-major\/\">Chemistry<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students could also supplement another major with a <a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/chemistry-minor\/\">minor<\/a> in Chemistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-opportunities-beyond-the-classroom\">Opportunities Beyond the Classroom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are invited to participate in numerous extracurricular events\/organizations, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/research-opportunities\/\">Undergraduate research<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/acs-student-chapter\/\">ACS Student Members Organization<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/chemistry\/course-offerings\/chemical-outreach\/\">Chemical Outreach<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Departmental sponsored events such as seminar speakers, game nights, or titration tournament.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We encourage you to come for a visit and chat with our students and faculty.  Please feel free to contact us,  to answer any questions you may have or to arrange for a facility tour or a classroom visit. Required courses span the traditional areas of organic, analytical, and physical chemistry, and include senior capstone experiences that help students hone their laboratory problem solving skills and their oral and written scientific communication. Other graduates have gone directly to work for industries such as Philip Morris, Virginia Power, and Atlantic Research, and for government agencies such as NASA, the Naval Research Laboratory, David Taylor Laboratories, and the State Consolidated Laboratories. Some of the areas in which chemistry majors have obtained professional employment include environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, clinical chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, biomedical and forensic science, and technical sales. major actively and successfully involved in undergraduate research.
