Welcome

At UMW, students can now complete a Major in Communication and Digital Studies or Minor in Digital Studies. This webpage contains information about both of these affiliated programs, including information about requirements and available courses. This site also posts information about relevant events and opportunities for CDS and DS students.

Major in Communication and Digital Studies

Students who pursue this major will develop the critical tools to study and use digital technology to effectively communicate in a dynamic new media environment. The major provides students with the means to navigate the rapidly changing nature of both communication networks and the world they live in. The coursework in this major focuses on new theoretical directions in the field of digital studies, and provides students with a dynamic understanding of how communication practices currently work through digital means and how those practices can be adapted to meet their future needs.

Minor in Digital Studies

The Minor in Digital Studies is an interdisciplinary program designed to give students from any major an opportunity to pursue related coursework inflected by digital tools, cultures, and practices. Many of the courses available as requirements or electives in this minor build upon UMW’s distinctive approach to innovating with digital platforms, including projects such as UMW Blogs, UMW Domains, and the ThinkLab.
