BLS students may select from many liberal arts majors offered by the University in the College of Arts and Sciences or create an approved, special major from the offerings of several departments. A comprehensive list of departmental majors can be found here:

Students must earn a grade point average (GPA) of at least a 2.0 in the major area. Transfer students must earn at least half of the major credits with UMW courses. BLS students earning a double major may use up to nine (9) credits from the primary major to satisfy requirements in the secondary major.

Declaring a Major

Students choose a major program and then submit the Major/Minor Declaration form found on the Registrar’s Page.
Take the form to the department chair for signature and then return it to the Registrar’s Office.

After a student declares a major, he/she should see their major advisor for subsequent advising sessions. The major advisor will provide the student with registration advising, and release the registration hold each semester which will allows students to register for the next semester’s classes.

Students may change their major by submitting a new Major/Minor Declaration Form.

A list of approved minors is listed on this webpage:

To declare a minor, download and complete the form, take it to the Registrar’s office for processing. You do not need a Department Chair’s signature to declare a minor unless the form indicates that you do. There are only three minors that require a signature (Arts or Business Administration, and Digital Studies).
