Position Title: Archival and Curatorial Assistant Intern Background: The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park (FRSP) includes a variety of historical documents. These documents represent the park's history dating back to the 1930's. They provide insight into past plans and practices that directly affect current resource management projects. The documents are improperly stored and at varying levels of decay. This project will preserve and protect the original documents and provide proper storage. It will also allow for these documents to be easily shared and readily accessible by all staff. In addition, FRSP includes a museum collection of artifacts related to the American Civil War battles in Fredericksburg, VA, and surrounding counties. Volunteering Opportunity at the Valentine Richmond History Center

The Valentine Richmond History Center (http://www.richmondhistorycenter.com/) is about to reopen a renovated facility that has been worked on for a couple of years. The inauguration events will take place during the third week in October and include parties and celebrations for which the museum is looking for volunteers to help primarily with crowd control and passing out programs. FRSP is creating a new space by rehabilitating a 1930’s War Department building and outfitting it with brand new cabinets and compact-mobile open shelving. In October 2014, FRSP will relocate the museum collection and needs assistance. Summer Internship at Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site (SGNHS) in Cornish, New Hampshire

Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site celebrates the famous American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, an artist of the Beaux-Arts period classically trained in clay, whose works range from bas-reliefs and numismatic designs to bronze sculptures. Among his well-known works were Civil War memorials such as; the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial on Boston Common which commemorates Shaw and the African-American 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and a portrayal of the 16th American President Abraham Lincoln: The Man (also called Standing Lincoln) at Lincoln Park in Chicago. The historic site comprises the artist’s house featuring original furnishings, his studio displaying plaster works and galleries showcasing bronze reliefs.  Outdoor bronze sculptures are admired amid the grounds and historic gardens.
