Basic Steps in Library Research

Step 1: Explore the Internet for background information on your topic. [See online research guide for cautions.]

Step 2: Use an encyclopedia, handbook, or other general work to provide background information on your topic.

Step 3: Use internet-based search engines to search for books and articles on your topic. [See database guide.]

Step 4: Use subject heading or keyword searches in the Library online catalog to find books on your topic.

Step 5: Find bibliographies in books on your topic and carefully mine the bibliographies and footnotes of your books for additional works.
