Archaeological Society of Virginia (ASV) Conference

ASV Conf 10-2013

In late October a number of students accompanied Prof. Sanford to the annual meeting of the Archaeological Society of Virginia (ASV), which is the state-wide organization for amateur, avocational, and professional archaeologists. This year the ASV conference took place in Virginia Beach, allowing the students to hang out on the ocean shore at times, see a few dolphins, collect some shells, and pet the locals’ dogs that were out for exercise. Seafood was close at hand as well. Students making the trip included preservation majors Jessica Bittner, Ginnie Gerrish, Megan Rosengrant, and Zach White; archaeology special major Robin Ramey; and, anthropology major Erin Dandridge. From the student perspective, the ASV conference provided a beneficial experience for all who attended, due to the varying types of research and methods presented by amateurs and professionals alike. Students Attend Wood Window Workshop

Students in Professor Spencer's HISP 461, Laboratory in Building Forensics class attended a workshop at Stratford Hall on November 15, 2013, for wood window preservation. Guided by Stratford Hall Architectural Conservationist Phil Marks, and Benjamin Curran, a Faculty Instructor in Preservation Carpentry with the Historic Preservation Program at Edgecombe Community College, students preserved four wood window sashes from the ca. 1930s crypt structure at Stratford Hall. The workshop encompassed everything from removing the windows sensitively, to stripping the paint, epoxy repair, Dutchman repair, and ultimately re-glazing. Professor Michael Spencer to Appear on Radio Program

The department's own Michael Spencer, assistant professor of Historic Preservation, will appear on the public radio show “With Good Reason” to discuss his class’s efforts to preserve a small church in Falmouth. The show, “Dreams of the Civil War,” will air beginning on Saturday, Nov. 2. The program also will feature commentary from instructors from several Virginia institutions, including Christopher Newport University and Norfolk State University. Topics of the show will include life during the Civil War, the influence of slave culture and American colonial essayists.
