This November, I had the chance to attend the Southeast Museum Conference annual meeting. The meeting was held in Williamsburg, Virginia at the Williamsburg Lodge. The meeting lasted three days and over 500 museum professionals attended. Throughout the course of the conference I attended seven sessions covering: collections and digital questions, design ideas every museum professional should know, care of historic houses, exhibit fundamentals, how to approach large projects, how to maximize volunteer output, and how to write conditions reports. Through these sessions, I was able to increase my knowledge of the workings of museums and what it takes to be successful in the museum profession. I was also able to form good connections, through networking, with professionals in a plethora of museums from a myriad of places, which will help me when I am searching for internships and jobs. Field Trip to Hollywood Cemetery
Join professor Doug Sanford on Saturday October 20th on a field trip to the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond Virginia. This historic cemetery was designed in 1847 by the architect John Notman and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Explore its 135 acres and discover the burial places of two American presidents, twenty-two confederate generals, thousands of confederate soldiers and many more famous grave-sites in the beautiful park-like setting. There is no admittance fee and really who doesn't want to spend their Saturday in a cemetery? The sign-up sheet is located in the office suite of the department of Historic Preservation. Lewis Store Open House
Did you hear? The Lewis Store is having an open house on October 5th from 6-9pm to show off their Vintage Route 1 Timeline Exhibit and let the public know what the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation Inc. (HFFI) has planned for the coming months. For those of you not in the know, the Lewis store is one of the oldest surviving retail buildings in the United states, constructed in 1749 by Fielding Lewis.
