Students do well at SEDAAG

This year, the Department took 7 students to compete in the World Geography Bowl at the Southeast Division of the Association of American Geographers (SEDAAG) meeting in Asheville, NC.  Team Virginia (aka UMW) tied for second with Team North Carolina, which beat out Viriginia in overall points and thus moved on to the final round.  Ethan Bottone ’13 tied for third place among all students (and will be invited to represent SEDAAG at the national conference of the AAG in Los Angeles) and was the highest scoring undergraduate; Jamie van Emmerik ’14 finished in sixth place.  Congratulations to the team! … [Read more...]

UMW Geography Cambodia Winter study abroad program accepting last-minute applications

Update (November 22, 2012): As a result of some last minute cancellations, we still have two openings for the upcoming program. Time is short, but it's not too late yet! If you are interested, please e-mail Dr. Rallis go the the Center for International Education Office to get the necessary paperwork done. During the 2012-13 Winter Break, Dr. Donald Rallis will lead a 3 1/2 week-long Geography Department Study Abroad Program in Cambodia. Participants in the Program will visit the ruins of the city of Angkor, the city of Siem Reap, the country's capital city of Phnom Penh, and the coastal town of Sihanoukville. The main aim of the program is to provide participants with an introduction to the geography, history, and society of Cambodia, a developing country with a long and proud ancient history, but which endured foreign domination, civil wars and genocide in the late 20th century.
