2020 Graduate Krista Beucler Publishes First Short Story

Krista Beucler '20 recently published her first short story, a piece that originated in her first creative writing class at the University of Mary Washington with Professor Warren Rochelle. Krista completed her degree this spring with a major in English: Creative Writing and minors in Spanish and Museum Studies. While at UMW, Krista was the recipient of the Laurie Mansell Reich '79 and Henry E. Reich Jr. Scholarship and was a finalist for the Barbara Thomas Phillips Creative Writing Scholarship. Krista was the Editor-in-Chief for Issue 7.2 of the Rappahannock Review, the literary journal published by the University of Mary Washington. Working with Professor Rochelle as her advisor, Beucler's graduated in Spring 2020 with departmental Honors by completing the Honors project "Introduction to the Publishing Industry." Heiderman Wins Lutterbie Senior Service Award

Sierra Heiderman, graduating senior with a major in English, has won the 2019-2020 Carlton R. Lutterbie Jr. Outstanding Senior Service Award for the Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication. Heiderman was recognized for her work as a Department of ELC social media intern and student aide over several semesters. The Carlton R. Lutterbie Jr. Outstanding Senior Service Award is one of two ways that the Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication commemorates former professor Carleton R. Lutterbie Jr. There is also the Carleton R. Lutterbie Jr. Scholarship, established in 2005, which has assisted numerous English majors, including, most recently, December 2019 graduate James Vaughan. The award and the scholarship reflect the esteem in which Carleton R. Lutterbie Jr. was held by his family, friends, and colleagues. UMW Debate Takes 3rd at National Championship; Brovero Recognized as “Judge of the Year”

The University of Mary Washington Debate Team has wrapped up its competitive season with a phenomenal 3rd place finish at the American Debate Association’s National Championship. Senior John Huebler, junior Jo Misker, and first-year students Andrew Hudgins and Ainsley Rucker remained on campus for most of spring break in order to prepare to compete at the National Championship held at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, March 6-8. The tournament fielded competitors from across the nation, including Harvard, University of California-Berkeley, and Dartmouth, as well as UMW’s frequent competitors from the region, including George Mason, Liberty and the US Naval Academy. Rucker and Huebler competed in varsity, with wins against an opponent from Indiana University and an opponent from the University of Michigan that reached the Sweet Sixteen. The Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication, which sponsors a chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the most prominent national literary honor society that recognizes students' achievements in literary studies, inducted new members on April 26, 2019.
