Barbara Thomas Phillips Creative Writing Scholarship

Barbara Thomas Phillips graduated from Mary Washington in 1948, and has been a generous and longtime supporter.  She created this scholarship in 2000 to benefit a junior or senior exhibiting excellence in writing. Typically, the recipient is chosen at the end of the Fall semester and the award money is applied to the following Spring semester.

Application for the scholarship requires submission of a creative writing portfolio which may contain either:

  • three poems;
  • fiction or creative nonfiction up to ten pages double-spaced;
  • a combination of poetry and prose not to exceed ten pages.

 The Phillips Scholarship will be awarded again in December 2017.
