Tips for Successful Research Grant Proposals

Suggestions provided by the Faculty Development and Grants Committee (April 2008)

In general, read the guidelines carefully and address each point and sub-point as directly as possible in the appropriate section.

Additionally, follow these five suggestions:

  1. Itemize the budget, especially if requesting expenses.
  2. Provide as much detail as possible about the methods or steps you will take.
  3. Discuss your activities relative to a detailed timeline.
  4. Remember that most members of the committee will have little or no experience in your field. Explain your project as if you were writing for a non-specialist.
