All minors must adhere to these General Requirements for Minors, as approved by the College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Senate.
Minors Approved in the College of Arts and Sciences
These minors were approved during the 2009-10 academic year and became available to students starting in the fall semester 2010. Students should contact the Office of Academic Services for information about declaring a minor.
Chemistry Minor
Requirements for the Chemistry Minor
Twenty-three (23) to twenty-five (25) credits including:
- CHEM 111, CHEM 112,
- one of the following sequences: CHEM 211 / CHEM 212 or CHEM 253 / CHEM 254, and
- three courses (7-9 credits) from CHEM 317,318, 319, 331, 332, 343, 345, 383, 384, and 387. Note – no more than one of these three courses may be a laboratory course.

Computer Science Minor
Requirements for the minor in Computer Science (20 credits):
- CPSC 220
- CPSC 230
- Any three (3) CPSC courses numbered 300 or above, for a total of at least 9 credits
- Any additional CPSC course, of at least 3 credits, numbered 100 or higher

Asian Studies Minor
Requirements for the Asian Studies Minor
Twenty-four (24) credits including two semesters (6 credits) or the equivalent of an Asian language (the language credits apply to one language, taken in sequence; the language may be taken at UMW or at an outside institution or as part of a study abroad program for transfer credit); six additional non-language courses, representing at least two different academic disciplines, of which a minimum of 9 credits must be at the 300 level or above. A maximum of 6 credits Individual Study and/or Internship may count toward fulfilling the minor requirements.

French Minor
The minor in French requires 24 credits. Students must complete FREN 201 and 202 (or the equivalent), FREN 311, FREN 312, and any four (4) additional FREN classes at or above the 300-level.

Biology Minor
Requirements: 22-23 credits of courses designated BIOL to include:

BIOL 481, 491 and 499 may not be counted for minor credit.

Mathematics Minor
18 credits in mathematics. Any course numbered Math 210 or higher counts toward the minor, with the exception of internship credits (Math 499). At least 12 credits must be earned from mathematics courses numbered 300 and above. At most, three credits of Math 491 (directed study) may be counted toward the mathematics minor.

Applied Mathematics Minor
18 credits in mathematics. Six credits come from MATH 223 and 312; 9 additional upper level credits must come from MATH 300, 351, 352, 381, 382, 411, 461 (with departmental approval), and 491 (with department approval); the final 3 credits may be taken from any course in the additional upper level list above or MATH 210, 224, CPSC 220, or any 300/400 level course in a related discipline with mathematics department approval. At most, three credits of Math 491 (directed study) may be counted toward the applied mathematics minor.

Linguistics Minor
18 required credits in linguistics. The required courses are:
LING 101: Introduction to Linguistics (3 credits)
LING 301: Introduction to Psycholinguistics (3 credits)
LING 302: Introduction to Sociolinguistics and Anthropological Linguistics (3 credits)
LING 309: Introduction to Phonology OR LING 311: Introduction to Morphology (3 credits)
Any 400-level Seminar in Linguistics (3 credits)
Any other linguistics course offered through the Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication (LING 202, 205, 251, 305, 307, 310, 312, 375, 491, 499, or alternates of the choices above as approved by a Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication linguistics advisor).

Business French
Requirements: Twenty-four (24) credits, including French 311, French 312, French 313, and French 316; 3 credits from French 411, French 412, or French 499; and one of the following sequences: a) Business 131, Business 132, and one Business course at the 300-level or higher; or b) Economics 201, Economics 202, and one Economics course at the 300-level or higher. Business German minors can take no more than 29 credits in Business without declaring a Business major.

Business German
Requirements: Twenty-six (26) credits including 1) GERM 393, 2) GERM 394, 3) GERM 313, 4) GERM 317 or GERM 485b or GERM 485c, 5) GERM 499 or BUAD 499 or ECON 499 (for at least 1 credit), 6) one of the following: a. BUAD 131+ 132 + one BUAD on the 300 level or above OR b. ECON 201+ 202 + one ECON on the 300 level or above. Business German minors can take no more than 29 credits in Business without declaring a Business major.

Business Spanish
Requirements: twenty-seven ((27) credits beyond Spanish 202, including the following. One course in culture from Span 315, Span 316, or Span 320; two courses in language, Span 317 and Span 318; both advanced courses in business and translation, Span 393 and Span 414; one course from Span 499 or BUAD 499 or Econ 499; and one of the following two tracks of Business or Economic courses: Track A) BUAD 131, 132, and a Business course at the 300-level or higher or Track B) ECON 201, 202, and an Economics course at the 300-level or higher. Business Spanish minors can take no more than 29 credits in Business without declaring a Business Major.

Museum Studies
Requirements: Eighteen (18) credits to include Art History 315 or Historic Preservation 200; Art History 317 or Historic Preservation 463; 9 elective credits from among Anthropology 309, 341, 342; Classics 380; Historic Preservation 208, 303; special topics courses, such as Historic Preservation 471 or History 471, or special topics courses from Art History, Anthropology, or Classics to be chosen by the student and the advisor; and, Art History 317 or Historic Preservation 463 if not used to satisfy one of the requirements above. One 3-credit Individual Study course may be substituted for one of the elective courses with the approval of the
instructor and chair of the home department. Internship: 499 – Internship (minimum 3 credits). An additional 3 credits of internship may be substituted for one elective course listed above.
Students should contact the chair of the Historic Preservation Department regarding which special topics courses are approved to count towards this minor.
