Biochemistry Major Track

Curriculum for the Biochemistry Track in Chemistry at UMW.
The Biochemistry Major will be a track within the Chemistry Department (effective Fall 2017).

Prerequisite courses

  • MATH 121, MATH 122 (4 credits each)
  • PHYS101 or 105, and  PHYS102 or 106 (4 credits each course)

Required Biology Courses

  • BIOL 121, BIOL 132; or BIOL 125, BIOL 126 (4 credits each)
  • BIOL 340 Cellular Biology (4 credits)
  • BIOL 341 Genetics (4 credits)

Required Chemistry Courses

  • CHEM 111, CHEM 112  (4 credits each)
  • CHEM 211 and 212 Organic Chemistry I and II with Laboratory (4 credits each)
  • CHEM 317 Biochemistry I Lecture (3 credits)
  • CHEM 319 Biochemistry I Lab (1 credit)
  • CHEM 318 Biochemistry II Lecture (3 credits)
  • CHEM 320 Biochemistry II Lab (1 credit)
  • CHEM 383 Physical Chemistry I (3 credits)
  • CHEM 453 Seminar (2 credits)

Required Elective Courses (complete 1 course from the below list)

  • BIOL 342 Nutrition and Metabolism (3 credits)
  • BIOL 440 Biology of Cancer (3 credits)
  • BIOL 443 Biology and Biochemistry of Proteins (3 credits)
  • BIOL 444 Bioinformatics (3 credits)
