Transfer Credit Guide

Students interested in attending another institution must fill out a Transfer Permission Request form. This form is available online at the Transfer Credit Permission . Permission must be granted prior to registering at another institution. Classes taken at another institution counting in the major must have the approval of the student’s major advisor and chairperson of the academic department.

Upon successful completion of coursework, the student must have an official transcript sent directly to the Office of the Registrar. Please send transcripts to:

University of Mary Washington
Office of the Registrar
ATTN: Patricia Sarkuti, Transcript Credit Coordinator
1301 College Avenue
Fredericksburg, VA 22401

If a student has transferred ninety credits into UMW and still wishes to take courses at another institution to fulfill an academic requirement, the student must first delete the required number of credits from the official record to make room for the new transfer work.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

BLS students have the option of receiving credit through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). CLEP credit is considered transfer credit and limited to a total of thirty. Students wishing to transfer in CLEP credit while attending UMW must fill out the Request Form: CLEP  prior to taking the exam. For further information, including testing sites near you see the College Board website.

Military Education and Training

The American Council on Education (ACE)  has evaluated most formal military and training experiences for possible college level credit. Official ACE transcripts should be sent to the Office of Admissions during the initial admitting process for evaluation. No more than thirty ACE credits can be applied toward the BLS degree.

Life Experience/Portfolio Credit

Students enrolled in the BLS program may choose to develop one or more portfolios regarding prior learning experiences that occurred outside of the traditional classroom setting. These experiences may include education or training that they received while in the military or working in the corporate world. Also included in these experiences may be hobbies and community service activities where training or education took placed. Whatever the setting, many adults have gained important college-level knowledge that may be equated to college credit. Portfolio credits are considered transfer credits. The maximum number is usually fifteen credit hours. In special cases an evaluator may award up to thirty credits. Contact Ana Chichester at 540-654-1989 regarding portfolio questions.
