Werner Wieland, Professor of Biology, holds a Ph.D in zoology from Auburn University, and an M.S. and B.S. in biology from Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Wieland received the Mary Pinschmidt Award in 2000, having been selected by the graduating class as the faculty member whom they will most likely remember as the one who had the greatest impact on their lives. In addition, he was awarded the 2001 Distinguished Faculty Achievement Certificate by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Dr. Wieland is an expert in the areas of aquatic biology, fish, fisheries, and evolution. He is a Certified Fisheries Professional with the American Fisheries Society, editor of the Virginia Journal of Science and past president of the Virginia Academy of Sciences. In addition, he is a member of the American Fisheries Society, the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, the Southeastern Fishes Council, and the Virginia Natural History Society, among others. He has been a principal investigator for research involving ecosystems in the Rappahannock and York river basins, and he has had articles published in the Virginia Journal of Science and Southeastern Biology.
